Humic acid-based fertilizers hold great potential!

2022-05-06

Over the past few decades, China’s grain production has accounted for only 16% of the global total, yet its fertilizer consumption has reached 31% of the world’s total. Excessive fertilizer application has led to soil acidification or alkalization, severely compromising soil quality and disrupting the nutritional balance of plants. Although this practice has resulted in noticeable yield increases, the efficiency of fertilizer use has been on the decline. A similar issue has emerged in the use of pesticides in agricultural production: China’s annual pesticide consumption amounts to as much as 1.8 million tons, but the utilization efficiency remains below 30%, and the combined effects of multiple pesticides are causing damage to the soil ecosystem.

At present, the irrational application of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, coupled with a decline in the use of organic fertilizers, has significantly weakened the soil’s capacity to immobilize and detoxify pesticide residues, heavy metals, and other toxic substances, thereby severely constraining the sustainable development of agriculture. Humic acid, which contains a variety of oxygen‑containing functional groups, exhibits unique physical, chemical, and biological activities. When applied in combination with chemical fertilizers and pesticides as a highly active organic amendment, it can directly or indirectly reduce fertilizer and pesticide inputs while enhancing their efficacy, offering broad prospects for practical application.
Humic acid is a naturally occurring substance derived from soil, inherently environmentally friendly. Returning industrially extracted humic acid to the soil can enhance the efficiency of chemical fertilizers and, by boosting fertilizer performance, significantly mitigate their adverse effects on soil physicochemical properties. Extensive research demonstrates that applying humic‑acid‑based fertilizers increases soil humus content, improves soil structure, and thereby enhances soil fertility; for plants, it promotes growth, boosts yields, and improves product quality; and for fertilizers, it facilitates nitrogen fixation, solubilizes phosphorus, activates potassium, increases fertilizer use efficiency, and reduces nutrient leaching. Practical experience confirms that, in terms of enhancing fertilizer efficacy and reducing application rates, humic‑acid fertilizers fully leverage their eco‑friendly attributes. Moreover, the use of humic‑acid fertilizers represents a viable, sustainable approach in agricultural practice for improving fertilizer utilization, ameliorating soil physicochemical characteristics, enhancing crop stress tolerance, and elevating crop quality.
Humic acid, as a natural organic macromolecular mixture, possesses the characteristics necessary for developing safe, low‑toxicity, and low‑residue pesticides, thereby meeting the demands of green pesticide development. In the current context, with the annual increase in pesticide use, issues such as human and animal poisoning, food contamination, and environmental degradation are becoming increasingly pronounced. Humic acid contains numerous active functional groups—such as phenolic hydroxyls, enol groups, sulfonic acid groups, quinone groups, and methoxy groups—that govern its acidity, hydrophilicity, ion‑exchange capacity, complexation ability, and adsorption properties. Owing to these diverse advantageous properties, humic acid plays a pivotal role in reducing pesticide application rates while enhancing efficacy, by boosting pesticide activity, slowing degradation rates, improving stability, increasing solubility, and lowering toxicity. Beyond direct interactions with pesticides, humic acid also exerts indirect effects—by enhancing crop stress tolerance, inhibiting pathogenic microorganisms, and degrading residual pesticides—thereby contributing to reduced input and increased effectiveness.
In modern agricultural production, the overuse of fertilizers and pesticides is widespread, severely hindering the sustainable development of agriculture. Against the backdrop of vigorously advancing the “Battle to Protect Clear Waters, Blue Skies, and Clean Soil,” achieving green agricultural development has become a major trend for the future of farming. In this effort to promote green agriculture, humic‑acid‑based agrochemicals—boasting natural origins, high efficiency, environmental friendliness, and eco‑compatibility—have emerged as an important pathway for reducing input while boosting yields, thereby safeguarding both food safety and ecological health. These products hold tremendous potential for increasing crop productivity, enhancing the ecological environment, ensuring the sustainable use of resources, and improving socio‑economic benefits.
