Humic acid holds great promise for environmental protection; its composition and properties underpin its broad potential in this field.
Because humic substances contain functional groups such as quinone and semiquinone moieties in their molecular structures, they can react with hydrogen sulfide and thus serve as desulfurizing agents for exhaust gases. Humic acid and its salts can also be used as adsorbents for nuclear fission products, coagulants in the treatment of radioactive wastewater, and adsorbents for isotopes and rare elements in the processing of radioactive waste and effluents. With a large internal surface area and the presence of carboxyl and phenolic hydroxyl groups, humic acid can engage in ion exchange, complexation, and chelation with heavy metal ions. Consequently, it can be employed to treat industrial wastewaters containing heavy metals, oil‑containing wastewater, dyeing and printing effluents, as well as gaseous emissions.
As early as the 1970s, institutions such as Northeast Normal University, Shanghai Institute of Chemical Technology, and the Institutes of Geography and Soil Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences employed humic substances to adsorb heavy metal ions from industrial wastewater. The adsorption efficiency was one to several times higher than that of activated carbon, with removal rates for mercury, lead, copper, cadmium, zinc, and other heavy metals reaching 90% to 98%. Humic substances also demonstrated excellent adsorption performance for wastewater containing Cr6+.
