The role of microbial fertilizers is becoming increasingly significant; to a large extent, they determine the economic returns of vegetable production. So, what exactly are the specific functions of microbial fertilizers?
In protected vegetable production, the repeated application of excessive fertilizers leads to residual nutrients that are not fully absorbed by the crops. Over time, these residues accumulate in the soil, degrading soil quality, causing salinization and acidification, and resulting in soil compaction and reduced permeability—conditions that predispose vegetables to a range of diseases. During vegetable cultivation, increasing the use of microbial biofertilizers while reducing chemical fertilizer inputs can effectively improve soil health, lower production costs, and enhance vegetable quality.
This is because microbial fertilizers, during application, can activate the soil and release nutrients that have been immobilized, thereby enhancing the uptake and utilization of fertilizers. Moreover, the microorganisms in these fertilizers produce plant growth regulators as they grow and multiply, stimulating crop development and improving vegetable quality. In addition, during their growth and reproduction, these microbes can suppress the occurrence and progression of various soil-borne diseases and exhibit strong inhibitory effects against root-knot nematodes. Microbial fertilizers are a novel type of fertilizer that is efficient, economical, and environmentally friendly, making them well worth promoting and applying in protected‑field vegetable production.
To ensure that microbial fertilizers truly deliver yield and efficiency gains while promoting environmental sustainability in the production of pollution‑free vegetables, it is essential not only to educate producers about the characteristics and types of microbial fertilizers but also to apply them rationally in protected‑culture vegetable systems. Moreover, microbial fertilizers are merely supplementary inputs; they cannot replace chemical or organic fertilizers, and fertilizer management for pollution‑free vegetable production should continue to prioritize organic fertilizers.
