Bio-organic fertilizer refers to a type of fertilizer that combines specific functional microorganisms with organic materials derived primarily from plant and animal residues—such as livestock and poultry manure and crop straw—which have undergone harmless treatment and decomposition. It exhibits both the effects of microbial fertilizers and organic fertilizers.

This type of fertilizer combines the advantages of organic and bio‑fertilizers, thereby boosting yields and incomes while enhancing soil fertility, improving the soil micro‑ecosystem, reducing the application of inorganic fertilizers, and elevating and refining the quality of agricultural products.

  The efficacy of bio-organic fertilizers

  1. Increase crop yield and improve crop quality.

Bio-organic fertilizers release nutrients slowly. With respect to nitrogen, they primarily supply plants in the form of NH4+ or amino acids; once absorbed into plant cells, these forms directly participate in the synthesis of cellular constituents, resulting in rapid plant growth, greater accumulation of sugars and other compounds, and consequently, higher‑quality agricultural products, while minimizing contamination by harmful substances such as nitrates.

  2. Enhance soil fertility and improve the soil’s physicochemical properties.

Soil organic matter directly influences soil fertility, including its ability to retain nutrients, conserve water, buffer against pH changes, and ensure adequate aeration. Consequently, the content of soil organic matter is an important indicator of soil fertility and constitutes the material basis of soil fertility.

Applying bio-organic fertilizer not only replenishes depleted plant nutrients but also continuously increases soil organic matter content.

  3. Enhance the soil’s ability to supply nutrients to crops

In general, bio-organic fertilizers contain nitrogen-fixing microorganisms.

Bio-organic fertilizers also contain a certain number of phosphate-solubilizing microorganisms and silicate bacteria; upon application to the soil, these microorganisms multiply and synergize with other soil microbes, thereby enhancing the soil’s nutrient‑supplying capacity.

  4. Improve the soil microecosystem and enhance soil biological fertility.

Generally, well‑decomposed organic fertilizers contain beneficial microorganisms such as yeasts, lactic acid bacteria, and cellulose‑degrading bacteria, while bio‑organic fertilizers enriched with functional strains may also harbor additional beneficial microbes.

In addition to their capacity to produce a wide array of bioactive compounds, some of these microorganisms can also fix nitrogen, solubilize phosphorus, and release potassium; others possess the ability to suppress plant‑associated pathogenic microbes in the rhizosphere, while still others contribute to the amelioration of the soil microbial ecosystem.

  5. Reduce or mitigate the occurrence of plant diseases and pests.

Bio-organic fertilizers improve the soil’s ecological environment and microbial community, playing an even more significant role in reducing the incidence of crop diseases and pests.

This is because bio-organic fertilizers contain a diverse community of non-pathogenic microorganisms that, during their growth and reproduction, exert competitive inhibition and secrete various antibiotics, insecticidal compounds, and plant growth hormones, thereby helping to prevent and control plant diseases.
