We know that potatoes are typically planted in soil, but a hydroponic method has also become very popular. So, do you know what steps are involved in growing potatoes hydroponically, and what precautions should be taken?

  1. What are the steps for growing potatoes hydroponically?

  1. Preparing the potatoes.

To grow potatoes hydroponically, first place fresh, plump potatoes in a plastic bag and seal it, storing them in a cool, shaded area to encourage sprouting. If the potatoes have already sprouted, you can skip this step.

  2. Plate the dish and add water.

For hydroponic potato cultivation, you can use a shallow dish or container. Fill it with enough water to just cover the potato pieces, then arrange the potatoes neatly on the surface. Place a decorative pebble beside the dish—it not only enhances the visual appeal but also provides support for the potatoes.

  3. Cover with a tissue.

In the early stages of hydroponic cultivation, it’s best to cover the potato with paper towels, ensuring that the paper is fully immersed in clean water. This helps maintain moisture and creates a warm environment, encouraging the sprouts to grow. Once you notice small, fine roots emerging, you can remove the paper towels.

  4. Post‑construction maintenance.

When growing potatoes hydroponically, it’s essential to keep the water level adequate and change the water every 5 days or so. In summer, bacteria and viruses multiply more rapidly, so you may want to refresh the water every 3 days to prevent root rot. During the flowering stage, adding a few drops of nutrient solution can help the plants bloom more vigorously.

II. What should you pay attention to when growing potatoes hydroponically?

  1. Temperature.

The ideal growing temperature for hydroponic plants ranges from 5 to 30 degrees Celsius. In other words, as long as the temperature is comfortable for humans, it will also be comfortable for the plants, allowing them to grow normally—even in winter, they can remain lush and vibrant, bringing a lively touch to our surroundings.

  2. Light.

Prioritize diffused light. Diffused light refers to natural light that enters through windows and other openings, scattering evenly throughout the room. For most plants, adequate illumination is sufficient; direct sunlight isn’t always necessary. In summer, it’s best to avoid exposing them to intense, direct sunlight.

  3. Nutrient solution.

Generally, you can simply use commercially available hydroponic nutrient solutions. Follow the instructions to prepare the appropriate concentration—whether it’s a 400‑fold or a 1000‑fold dilution—and be sure not to mix up the ratios. Before mixing, let tap water sit for two hours to half a day until its temperature is close to room temperature and any residual chlorine has fully evaporated. Then add the concentrated nutrient solution according to the specified ratio, and you’ll have a ready‑to‑use nutrient solution for growing hydroponic plants.
