Dryland areas account for approximately 70% of China’s total land area, with rainfed cropland covering about 500 million hectares—roughly 50% of the country’s total cultivated land. Rainfed agriculture plays a crucial role in ensuring national food security. Maize is one of the most important grain crops in dryland regions; however, constrained by limited water resources, its yields remain at relatively low levels, and its yield potential has yet to be fully realized. Moreover, excessive fertilizer application is a widespread issue in rainfed maize production, leading to reduced nitrogen use efficiency, increased nitrogen losses, and heightened environmental risks.
I. The Impact of Drought on Corn
1. Drought affects Reproductive period Effects: During the seedling stage, drought inhibits maize growth rate and significantly delays the developmental period; whereas during the jointing stage, it promotes early maturity, leading to a marked shortening of the developmental period.
2. Drought affects Plant height Impact: Drought significantly inhibits maize plant height.
3. Drought affects Corn leaf Effects: Drought causes leaf blades to curl, wilt, and dry out, reducing the area of green tissue available for photosynthesis.
4. Drought on Inflorescence traits Impact: Drought can shorten the ear length of maize and reduce the number of kernels per ear, ultimately leading to a decline in yield.
5. Corn Flaring stage Under drought conditions, female spikelet development is slow, resulting in partial‑length spikes with degeneration of the upper portion; in severe cases, female spikelet development is severely inhibited and abortion occurs, leading to barren plants.
6. Pre-anthesis stage Drought delays anther dehiscence, leading to poor pollination and the formation of flower seeds.
7. Pollination period In dry, hot weather—especially during prolonged periods of temperatures above 35°C—the viability of pollen declines, impairing pollination and resulting in sparse or empty tassels. Visually, the stamens continuously protrude from the bracts, forming long, beard-like filaments.
Corn that remains in a drought‑prone or semi‑arid environment exhibits stunted growth, slow development or complete cessation of growth, with leaves that curl, wrinkle, turn yellow, and may even wither and die. If the drought conditions ease and the plants resume growth, they tend to remain green for an extended period, producing multiple small, sterile tillers at nodes above and below the ear, and are more susceptible to damage from the European corn borer, which attacks the stalks and young ears.
8. Grain-filling stage When corn is hit by drought, the kernels fail to fill properly, the ears become loose and flabby, and on some ear axes, the kernels are arranged in a graduated, stepwise pattern from large at the base to small at the tip.
II. How to Mitigate the Threat of Drought
In response to post-sowing drought challenges in corn cultivation, Nongda Fertilizer has launched a premium, multi‑component, high‑end product—“Siping Bajian.” Building on the foundation of conventional organic‑inorganic compound fertilizers, this formulation is tailored to the unique conditions of rainfed fields and grounded in crop nutrition science. Through rigorous testing, it incorporates high‑efficiency, fine‑particle water‑retention agents (H‑SAP), highly active humic acids, and essential micronutrients, resulting in a cutting‑edge, eco‑friendly compound fertilizer that integrates four key functions: nutrient supply, soil conditioning, water retention, and enhanced efficacy.
Product Advantages:
1. Supplemented with abundant macronutrients, organic matter, and secondary and micronutrients, ensuring balanced nutrition and promoting growth while enhancing stress resistance.
2. Rich in highly active humic acid, it promotes the formation of soil aggregate structure, balances soil pH, and improves and revitalizes the soil.
3. Contains a high‑energy water‑retention agent (H‑SAP) that effectively stores moisture, reduces nutrient leaching, and enhances both water and fertilizer retention.
Usage and Dosage:
1. This product can be used as a base fertilizer or a topdressing; it may be broadcast prior to tillage. If applied simultaneously with seed fertilizer, ensure proper separation between the two.
2. It is recommended to apply 40–60 kg per mu as a base fertilizer and 20–30 kg per mu as a topdressing. The specific application rates and methods should be determined under the guidance of local agricultural extension personnel, taking into account the target yield of the crop.
