Recent weather has been as unpredictable as human moods: just days ago, scorching heat had farmers sweating under the sun, and now we’re faced with stormy conditions—thunder and lightning, heavy rain, and strong winds. This alternating pattern of intense heat and persistent rainfall can negatively affect the growth of greenhouse vegetables. To understand the specific impacts and how to overcome these climatic challenges, let’s take a closer look together.
1. High temperatures and prolonged rainy weather can easily lead to excessive vegetative growth in vegetables.
Cause: Under high-temperature and low-light conditions, vegetable photosynthesis is reduced while respiration remains normal, leading to excessively rapid vegetative growth and a tendency toward etiolation, characterized by vigorous stem and leaf development and slow fruit growth.
Solution: Under low-light conditions, increase light exposure appropriately; when light is too intense, use shade nets to reduce illumination. For artificial growth‑regulation, you can apply growth‑inhibiting products, such as Nongda Changziya.
2. After a prolonged period of overcast weather, vegetables are prone to nutrient deficiencies.
Cause: Prolonged cloudy and rainy weather results in insufficient light, weakening photosynthesis and reducing the roots’ ability to absorb nutrients, which can lead to nutrient deficiency symptoms in the plants.
Solution: Apply foliar fertilizers, such as Nongda Heizefeng and Huangjinlu; apply functional humic acid fertilizers via root drenching, such as fulvic acid granules and mineral‑source potassium fulvate.
3. High temperature and high humidity make vegetables prone to disease.
Cause: In high-temperature, high-humidity conditions, pests and diseases thrive, leading to plant death and seedling rot.
Solution: Remove the affected leaves and apply a fungicide; improve ventilation to reduce humidity, and provide appropriate shade to lower temperatures.
