To accelerate the transformation of agricultural development and promote the protection and remediation of the agricultural ecological environment, China has placed increasing emphasis on soil restoration at the national level, leading to a nationwide surge in interest in “soil conditioners.” So, what exactly is a “soil conditioner”? To accelerate the transformation of agricultural development and promote the protection and remediation of the agricultural ecological environment, China has placed increasing emphasis on soil restoration at the national level, leading to a nationwide surge in interest in “soil conditioners.” So, what exactly is a “soil conditioner”? Microbial fertilizers also have soil‑conditioning effects—what is the relationship between the two?

  Strictly speaking, soil conditioners constitute a broad category of products positioned between fertilizers and pesticides. Applied specifically to the soil, they help enhance its physical properties, balance its nutrient profile, suppress or remove harmful substances, improve soil moisture conditions, or remediate contaminated soils—thereby promoting healthier, more productive soils. Regardless of how manufacturers market them, soil conditioners can be broadly classified into the following major categories based on their active ingredients:

  1. Soil physical structure improvers: humic acids, bentonite, peat, and others;

  2. Supplementary micronutrients: steel slag powder, bone meal, chitosan, ferrous sulfate, etc.;

  3. Soil pH‑balancing agents: calcium‑magnesium phosphate fertilizer, alkali slag, gypsum, etc.;

  4. Improving soil biodiversity: bio-organic fertilizers, microbial fertilizers, and the like;

  5. Remediation targeting specific harmful substances in soil: zeolites, etc.;

  6. For certain soil pests (to repel them or render them incapable of reproduction): some formulations containing sulfur or growth-inhibiting agents.

  Some soil conditioners are mixtures of the aforementioned two or more types of substances.

  Fun fact: What is the relationship between microbial inoculants and soil conditioners?

  It must be emphasized here that soils requiring soil conditioners are, in the vast majority of cases, already degraded and cannot rely on such treatments indefinitely; otherwise, over‑conditioning may occur. In fact, the most urgent and fundamental remedy for these “problem soils” is to restore their microbial diversity. Any soil conditioner that lacks a microbial‑mediated regulatory function is merely scratching the surface—addressing symptoms without tackling the root cause.

  On the other hand, microbial fertilizers serve as a companion to chemical fertilizers, to secondary and micronutrients, and even to farmyard manure and organic fertilizers. Designed to improve soil physical structure, balance soil chemical properties, or enhance soil biodiversity, microbial fertilizers can achieve synergistic effects when applied in conjunction with or mixed into organic fertilizers, thereby fully unleashing their soil‑conditioning benefits. Fundamentally, building a healthy soil ecosystem requires vigorous promotion of green agricultural development, addressing the root causes of soil‑environmental issues, and consistently relying on microbial preparations and organic fertilizers over the long term—only by integrating soil fertility, high yields, and superior quality can we attain our primary objective.
