Corn is, in fact, one of the most common vegetable crops. At the same time, it is also an important grain crop in China, cultivated across much of the country. However, only a handful of regions serve as its major production centers. Let’s take a look at where corn is primarily grown.
Corn is, in fact, one of the most common vegetable crops. At the same time, it is also an important grain crop in China, with cultivation taking place across much of the country. However, only a handful of regions serve as the primary production areas for corn. Let’s take a look at where these key corn‑producing regions are located.

Which province is the main corn-producing region?
Corn cultivation in China can be broadly divided into six major regions: the Northwest Irrigated Corn Region, the Huang–Huai–Hai Plain Summer‑Sown Corn Region, the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau Corn Region, the Northern Spring‑Sown Corn Region, the Southwest Mountainous Corn Region, and the Southern Hilly Corn Region. Among these six production areas, the Northern Spring‑Sown Corn Region accounts for the largest planted area, encompassing the three northeastern provinces. The provinces with the largest corn acreage include Heilongjiang, Henan, Inner Mongolia, Liaoning, Hebei, Shandong, Jilin, and Shanxi.

Corn varieties can be classified into three categories based on their maturity period:
(1) Early-maturing variety
For spring sowing, the growing period is 80–100 days with an accumulated temperature of 2,000–2,200°C; for summer sowing, it is 70–85 days with an accumulated temperature of 1,800–2,100°C. Early-maturing varieties typically have shorter plants and fewer leaves, usually 14–17 leaves. Due to the constraints of their short growing season, their yield potential is relatively limited.
(2) Mid-season variety
For spring planting, the growing period is 100–120 days, requiring an accumulated temperature of 2,300–2,500°C. For summer planting, the growing period is 85–95 days, with an accumulated temperature of 2,100–2,200°C. The number of leaves is greater than that of early-maturing varieties but fewer than that of late-sown varieties.

(3) Late-maturing variety
For spring planting, the growing period is 120–150 days, with an accumulated temperature of 2,500–2,800°C. For summer planting, it exceeds 96 days, with an accumulated temperature of at least 2,300°C. Plants are typically tall, with a large number of leaves—usually 21 to 25. Due to the long growth period, they exhibit considerable yield potential.
However, note that depending on temperature and daylength, the growth period of corn varieties can vary when grown in different regions. Classified by use, corn varieties can further be divided into sweet corn, waxy corn, high-oil corn, high-lysine corn, popcorn, and others. So, has everyone learned this?
