Large ginger generally refers to fresh ginger, which is also known by other names such as ginger root, “hundred‑spicy cloud,” “hooked‑finger ginger,” and “earth‑borne pungent.” It is cultivated in most regions of China and yields significant economic returns. During its growth cycle, large ginger is susceptible to numerous diseases and pests, which can severely hinder its development. So how can we effectively prevent and control these threats? Let’s take a look.
Common Nutrient Deficiency Symptoms in Ginger and Their Solutions
1. Supplement with high-potassium fertilizers; humic acid–containing fertilizers are recommended to enhance potassium uptake efficiency.
2. Use root-promoting fertilizers.
1. Supplement with fertilizers high in ferrous iron, such as Nongda Feiyi’s Biye Nongmai.
2. Avoid waterlogging in the field, and apply root‑promoting fertilizers to enhance root absorption capacity.
1. Supplement magnesium‑rich fertilizers, such as Nongda Fertilizer’s High‑Calcium Potassium‑Magnesium and Huangjinlu.
2. Apply root-promoting fertilizers to enhance the roots’ nutrient uptake capacity.
1. Supplement calcium. Examples include Nongda Fertilizer’s High-Calcium Potassium-Magnesium, Calcium‑Rich Calcium, and Wutian Calcium Soil Conditioner.
2. Use root‑promoting agents to enhance root absorption capacity. Potassium humate derived from mineral sources and bio‑inoculants are recommended.
Common Diseases and Pests of Ginger
Ginger wilt, root rot, wilt disease, anthracnose, Spot disease, leaf blight, soft rot, root-knot nematode disease
Agricultural control:
Select healthy, disease-free ginger seed rhizomes. Implement proper field layout and practice crop rotation, alternating every 2–3 years with crops from non‑ginger and non‑solanaceous families. Maintain well‑drained ditches to ensure effective water drainage after rainfall. Strengthen intertillage and weeding to keep fields clean and reduce the population of pathogens and pests. For systemic diseases such as ginger bacterial wilt, promptly remove infected plants at the onset of symptoms, along with the surrounding soil around their roots.
Physical control:
Install electronic insecticidal lamps to trap and kill pests such as cutworms, Japanese beetles, antlions, ginger stem borers, and beet armyworms. Hang one electronic insecticidal lamp (220 V, 15 W) per 30–50 mu, positioning it 1–1.5 meters above the plants.
Biological control:
Plant-derived pesticides such as matrine and azadirachtin, along with biopesticides like ningnanmycin, xinvimycin, and Bacillus thuringiensis (BT), are employed to control plant diseases and pests.
Chemical control:
Chemical control agents shall comply with the pesticide-use standards for pollution-free agricultural products, and the following precautions should be observed:
1. For different stages of the pest and disease management cycle, select appropriate pesticide formulations, apply them at the optimal timing, and rotate their use in a systematic manner.
2. Each pesticide should not be applied more than three consecutive times.
3. When multiple diseases and pests occur simultaneously, mixed applications are recommended.
4. During application, efforts should be made to minimize harm to beneficial organisms and avoid phytotoxicity to neighboring crops.
5. The final spray application should be carried out before the pre-harvest safety interval expires.
6. Refrain from using highly toxic, persistent pesticides.
7. Each application may be supplemented with appropriate nutrients to provide both pest control and fertilization. Before use, conduct a compatibility test in advance to prevent adverse reactions.
