Factors Affecting Citrus Flower Bud Differentiation and Management During the Flower Bud Stage

It is often said that flowers bloom and bear fruit—only by producing good flowers can one harvest superior fruit. February and March are the critical months for citrus flowering and fruit set, and they largely determine the crop yield for the coming year. Problems such as flower and fruit drop during the bud‑formation stage and low fruit‑set rates have long plagued growers, undermining orchard profitability. So, what factors constrain floral bud differentiation, and how can effective management be implemented during the citrus flowering‑bud period?
1. Causes of Citrus Flower Bud Differentiation and Methods to Promote Flowering
Citrus flower bud differentiation is the transition of mature shoots from vegetative to reproductive growth, and this process is primarily influenced by three factors: nutrient accumulation, temperature, and humidity.
Nutrient Accumulation: The growth of citrus trees is divided into three stages: vegetative growth, reproductive growth, and senescence. Typically, citrus trees first extend their branches, which then bear flowers and fruit. Once a sufficient number of branches, flowers, and fruits have developed, the tree transitions from vegetative to reproductive growth, facilitating flower formation and fruit set. Phosphorus is one of the key nutrients that promote floral bud differentiation. Given current fertilizer application rates in China, phosphorus deficiency is relatively uncommon in citrus orchards; however, excessive phosphorus can lead to an overabundance of flower buds and increased fruit set, while other nutrients such as nitrogen and potassium may become insufficient. Moreover, prolonged periods of cloudy, rainy weather can exacerbate flower and fruit drop.
Temperature: Temperature is the primary meteorological factor influencing floral bud differentiation in citrus. Due to vernalization, low temperatures during autumn and winter promote flower initiation, with December through February constituting the peak period for floral bud formation. After February, higher temperatures accelerate the differentiation process, shortening the time required for bud development. Furthermore, ample sunlight during the bud‑formation and flowering stages helps reduce flower and bud drop.
Humidity: During the autumn and winter seasons, the air tends to be dry and soil moisture is low, which weakens the roots’ ability to absorb nutrients and suppresses citrus auxin production, thereby promoting flower formation. Conversely, prolonged cloudy and rainy weather can easily lead to flower and fruit drop in citrus.
2. How should citrus trees be managed during the flower bud stage?
2.1 Fertilization to Promote Flowering
For trees with weak vigor, where autumn shoots have not fully matured even after the beginning of winter, or for trees bearing an excessive fruit load, consider applying a 16-8-24 compound fertilizer combined with Junlin Huifeng’s citrus‑specific microbial agent. Apply this by trenching along the tree canopy’s drip line and burying the fertilizer to promote rapid maturation of autumn and winter shoots and to accumulate the nutrients necessary for flower bud differentiation.
2.2 Pruning
Adjust the extent and timing of pruning according to the tree’s vigor, fruit‑bearing capacity, and flower‑bud abundance. For trees with strong vigor, normal fruit set, and abundant flowers, increase the pruning intensity and advance the pruning schedule; conversely, for trees with high fruit load but weak vigor and few flowers, apply lighter pruning and delay the pruning period. In spring, prioritize pruning autumn and winter shoots: remove all late‑autumn shoots, and lightly shorten or thin out some autumn and winter shoots to promote and enhance the quality of flower buds. Additionally, for trees with excessively tall canopies, reduce canopy height by removing large branches to improve light penetration within the crown, encourage the emergence of new growth, and gradually establish a three‑dimensional fruiting structure.
