Eight Physiological Disorders of Garlic and Their Control Measures

Release Date:

2021-02-23

China boasts abundant garlic resources and is the world’s largest producer of garlic. Counties such as Jinxiang, Cangshan, Qihe, and Guangrao in Shandong Province, as well as Qixian and Zhongmu in Henan Province, have become renowned specialized garlic-producing areas in China.
Garlic possesses antibacterial properties, and pathogenic diseases are generally not severe. However, inadequate management during cultivation often leads to irreversible physiological disorders, which not only significantly reduce yield but also compromise the commercial quality of garlic. Therefore, a thorough understanding of garlic’s physiological disorders is essential for enhancing both yield and marketable quality.
01 Physiological tip burn and yellowing of leaves

1. Increase the application of organic fertilizers; it is recommended to use fully decomposed commercial bio-organic fertilizers.
2. Apply supplemental fertilizer at the appropriate time; we recommend using a high-nitrogen water-soluble fertilizer in combination with a humic acid–based fertilizer, with humic acid of pure mineral origin delivering the best results.
3. Supplement calcium and magnesium fertilizers: apply calcium‑magnesium‑rich micronutrient mineral fertilizers as a base fertilizer, and foliar spray with calcium‑magnesium formulations.
02 Frost damage

1. Increase the application of organic fertilizers; it is recommended to use fully decomposed commercial bio-organic fertilizers.
2. Apply a humic acid–based fertilizer as a top dressing; pure mineral‑source formulations deliver the best results.
3. Apply foliar nutrients to enhance garlic’s resistance to frost damage.
03 Secondary growth

1. Select locally adapted varieties, practice appropriate planting density, and sow at the optimal time.
2. Increase the application of organic fertilizer; it is recommended to use fully decomposed commercial bio-organic fertilizer.
3. Control the application rate of nitrogen fertilizer; it is recommended to use controlled-release fertilizer as a base fertilizer.
4. Irrigate appropriately; avoid repeated, heavy watering.
04 Tubular leaf

1. Increase the application of organic fertilizers; it is recommended to use fully decomposed commercial bio-organic fertilizers.
2. Use nitrogen fertilizer judiciously; it is recommended to apply controlled-release fertilizer as a base application.
3. Apply boron and calcium fertilizers.
4. Manually break the bulb to facilitate the smooth emergence of the garlic scape.
05 Garlic bread

1. Increase the application of phosphate and potash fertilizers, and limit the use of nitrogen fertilizer.
2. Increase the application of organic fertilizer; it is recommended to use fully decomposed commercial bio-organic fertilizer.
3. Replace the garlic seed stock.
4. Sow at the optimal time to avoid planting too early.
5. Level the land to prevent water from pooling in low-lying areas.
06 Single-clove garlic

1. Select garlic cloves that are large, clearly divided into distinct segments, and plump.
2. Deeply till the garlic fields to enhance soil fertility, and apply additional organic fertilizer as well as phosphate and potash fertilizers.
3. Sow at the optimal time and implement effective pest and disease management.
4. Implement appropriate planting density to avoid excessive crowding.
07 Loose petals

1. Avoid using garlic varieties with thin, brittle skins.
2. For plots with a high groundwater table, use raised beds for sowing.
3. Sow at the optimal time.
4. Harvest promptly.
08 Acid damage

1. Increase the application of organic fertilizers; it is recommended to use fully decomposed commercial bio-organic fertilizers.
2. To improve soil acidity, it is recommended to use an acidic soil conditioner.
