Mastering the scientific and rational application of fertilizers for peanuts is a crucial pathway to increasing yields. By applying fertilizer in accordance with the crop’s nutrient requirements, we can fully meet its nutritional needs, maximize fertilizer efficiency, and enhance both yield and quality.
Peanuts are an important cash crop in China, rich in fats and proteins, serving both as food and animal feed. They are also a key industrial raw material and a major export commodity, with wide-ranging applications and a prominent position in the national economy. At present, China’s average peanut yield remains relatively low, leaving considerable room for yield improvement. Mastering scientifically sound and rational fertilization practices is a crucial pathway to boosting production. By applying fertilizer in accordance with peanuts’ nutrient requirements, we can fully meet their nutritional needs, maximize fertilizer efficiency, and enhance both yield and quality.
I. Characteristics of Peanut Nutrient Requirements
Peanuts require a variety of nutrients—nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, zinc, copper, iron, and manganese—for normal growth and development. Among these, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and calcium are needed in the greatest quantities, with an uptake ratio of 3:0.4:1:0.6. However, peanuts can obtain 70–80% of their nitrogen from rhizobial symbiosis, so the overall nitrogen application rate does not need to be very high. In addition to nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and calcium, numerous micronutrients—such as molybdenum, iron, manganese, boron, and sulfur—are crucial for peanut growth and yield enhancement and should not be overlooked.
II. Fertilization Techniques for Peanuts
Based on the nutrient requirements of peanuts, the rational selection and combined application of various fertilizers can increase yield and enhance quality. Nongda Fertilizer has introduced a well‑established, high‑yield, high‑efficiency solution for peanuts, centered on “Humic Acid Plus” and integrating organic, inorganic, micronutrient, microbial inoculants, and foliar‑fertilizer products into a single, all‑in‑one fertilization package. This comprehensive approach meets the nutritional needs of peanuts throughout their entire growth cycle, improving both quality and yield.
1. Apply sufficient base fertilizer: Adequate base fertilization ensures robust seedlings, enabling peanuts to grow steadily and laying a solid foundation for high yield and superior quality.
Base fertilization can utilize four types of fertilizers: The first is a peanut‑specific humic acid compound fertilizer, 18‑10‑12, which promotes the formation of rhizobia, enhances nitrogen fixation, and improves peanut stress resistance while upgrading grain quality. The second is a bio‑organic fertilizer—“One Top, Three Five Stars”—which increases soil organic matter and beneficial microbial populations, helping to prevent diseases, stimulate growth, and mitigate continuous cropping issues. The third type of fertilizer both supplies secondary and micronutrients and conditions the soil; after application, it effectively addresses problems such as soil acidification, salinization, and compaction, while also preventing physiological nutrient deficiencies and other related disorders. When selecting, consider the soil’s pH: use calcium‑potassium‑magnesium formulations to ameliorate acidic soils, and silicon‑calcium‑potassium‑magnesium blends for alkaline soils. The fourth option is a peanut‑specific composite microbial inoculant, which effectively controls soilborne diseases like white mold, fruit rot, and empty or shriveled pods, while simultaneously increasing soil organic matter and improving soil structure.
2. Timely topdressing: Topdressing for peanuts should be determined based on soil fertility, the amount of base fertilizer applied, and the plants’ growth status.
(1) Topdressing during the seedling stage: When soil fertility is low and base fertilizer application is insufficient, resulting in poor seedling growth, early topdressing with seedling fertilizer should be applied to promote vigorous early development. Topdressing at this stage should be carried out before the onset of flowering. Using the foliar fertilizer Anjiali Ye can help prevent deficiency‑induced yellowing, encourage dark green, thick, and robust leaves, enhance photosynthesis and dry matter accumulation, and simultaneously stimulate rhizobium activity, leading to well‑developed root systems. This promotes earlier emergence, higher emergence rates, more uniform stands, and improved tolerance to cold, drought, and disease, ultimately fostering strong, healthy seedlings.
(2) Topdressing during the pegging stage: After the onset of flowering, peanut plants enter a vigorous growth phase, with abundant effective flowers opening and numerous fruiting pegs penetrating the soil. Nutrient demand increases sharply at this time. If base fertilizer and seedling fertilizer were insufficient, timely topdressing should be applied according to the plant’s growth vigor and appearance. Three days after peak flowering, a foliar spray combining the fertilizers “Guozhenling” and “Huangjinlu” can be used to promote earlier flowering, more peg formation, higher pod set, and root development from green leaves, while also supplying water‑soluble calcium and magnesium—both rapidly absorbed and highly efficient—thus enhancing the development of effective flowers.
(3) Topdressing during the pod‑setting stage: In the later stages of peanut growth, vegetative growth gradually declines, with reproductive growth taking center stage. Root uptake diminishes, and nitrogen fixation progressively ceases. Leaves turn yellow, age, and fall off, leading to a rapid reduction in leaf area. At this point, foliar fertilization should be applied to enhance pod set and increase the rate of well‑filled pods. Twenty to thirty days before harvest, a combination spray of the foliar fertilizers “Guo Zhen Ling” and “Huang Jin Lu” can be used to effectively prevent premature senescence and lodging, ensure a high number of pods with uniform maturity, and improve the yield of shelled peanuts.
That's all. Agricultural University Fertilizer Industry Scientific Fertilization of Peanut Cultivation Plan For those who grow peanuts, you can refer to the fertilization methods outlined above. Plan , apply fertilizer appropriately based on the actual planting conditions.
