When selecting foliar fertilizers, it’s important to understand that there are many types available. You should choose the one best suited to your crops’ growth needs. Macronutrient fertilizers include single-element fertilizers such as nitrogen, potassium, phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, and sulfur, as well as compound fertilizers, blended fertilizers, and formulated fertilizers.

Another type of foliar fertilizer is an amino acid‑based formulation, with various amino acids as its primary ingredient. It typically uses industrial by‑product amino acids or amino acids derived from the hydrolysis of hair and waste leather. To enhance efficacy, it often contains a range of micronutrients. Due to its relatively strong acidity, it is best applied to soils that are not excessively acidic.

When using foliar fertilizers, it’s important to select a product that is appropriate for the specific crop to avoid causing damage.

Based on the cultivation characteristics of winter wheat, its nutrient requirements, and actual agricultural practices, three key steps should be emphasized in scientific fertilization: First, apply a well‑balanced base fertilizer. As an old farming proverb puts it, “Wheat is rich from the very beginning.” During the seedling stage, adequate nitrogen, along with phosphorus and potassium, promotes early, vigorous growth, ensures a sufficient number of healthy tillers before winter, and lays the groundwork for robust spike formation, increased grain number, and higher grain weight in the spring. Typically, with a target yield of 500 kg per mu, the recommended base application is 15 kg of urea, 25 kg of diammonium phosphate, and 15 kg of potassium chloride per mu.

If using compound fertilizer, apply it according to the nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium content specified on the label. Next, apply topdressing judiciously; this promotes tillering and spike formation. After the wheat seedlings green up in spring, for fields with weaker growth, apply 10 kg of urea per mu by band application or hole application, and if conditions permit, combine with irrigation. For robust seedlings, during the jointing stage, carefully manage fertilizer and water to prevent lodging. Finally, carry out foliar fertilization during the later stages of wheat development.
