1. Illumination

In years and regions with ample sunlight, fertilizer application can be appropriately increased to maximize its yield‑boosting effects; conversely, under conditions of insufficient light, nitrogen fertilizer rates should be reduced to prevent excessive vegetative growth.

2. Precipitation

In rainy regions and during rainy seasons, favorable conditions promote the decomposition of organic fertilizers and enhance nutrient uptake by crops; therefore, the application rate of chemical fertilizers may be appropriately increased, while measures should also be taken to prevent nutrient leaching through sound fertilization practices. In arid regions or in years characterized by drought, water scarcity is the primary limiting factor, and fertilizer effectiveness is typically reduced; under such circumstances, the amount of topdressing can be moderately decreased, or a single basal application can be made earlier in the growing season.

3. Temperature

In southern rice paddies, when low temperatures—such as those brought by cold air masses—are expected, apply a topdressing fertilizer earlier to prevent any adverse effects on the rice’s nutrient uptake. In colder regions where winter crops are grown, using phosphate fertilizer as a seed dressing can enhance seedling cold tolerance, helping the crops survive the winter safely. In Northeast China, early frosts can cause significant damage; therefore, nitrogen fertilizer should not be applied too late, as this may delay maturity and reduce yields.
