How does soil remediation work? Soil remediation refers to the use of physical, chemical, and biological methods to mobilize, absorb, degrade, or transform contaminants in the soil, reducing their concentrations to acceptable levels or converting toxic and hazardous pollutants into harmless substances.

Humic Acid Manufacturer: How Humic Acid Repairs Soil

Humic acid manufacturer How is soil remediation carried out? Soil remediation involves using physical, chemical, and biological methods to mobilize, absorb, degrade, or transform contaminants in the soil, reducing their concentrations to acceptable levels or converting toxic and hazardous pollutants into harmless substances. In the soil remediation industry, more than a hundred technologies have been developed, with over ten commonly employed techniques, broadly categorized into physical, chemical, and biological approaches.

How humic acid restores soil

The remediation effects of humic acid on soils contaminated by “heavy metals and toxic organic pollutants” primarily include: the adsorption‑precipitation of heavy metals and organic compounds; redox reactions; and the ability of humic acid to enhance the degradation of organic pollutants by soil microorganisms.

Practice has demonstrated that humic acid plays a highly significant role in soil remediation and improvement.

1. Humic acid alters the speciation of heavy metals in contaminated soils.

The accumulation and bioaccumulation of heavy metals impose substantial stress on soils. In soil, these metals predominantly exist in chelated or complexed forms. Humic acids, which are rich in a wide array of ions, can exchange their own ions with the heavy metal ions in these chelated and complexed states, thereby reducing the bioavailability of heavy metals to crops and mitigating the risk of heavy-metal contamination in agricultural products.

Light humic acid (fulvic acid) has a lower molecular weight, which facilitates the activation, solubilization, and desorption of heavy metals.

For example, irrigating the “hyperaccumulator plant” Nephrolepis exaltata with a solution containing fulvic acid can significantly enhance its uptake of various heavy metals.

Humic acids, including brown humic acid and black humic acid, have relatively high molecular weights and can reduce, adsorb, and immobilize heavy metals, thereby decreasing their bioavailability—for example, by stabilizing cadmium, mercury, and lead.

2. Humic acid reduces the toxicity of organic contaminants in polluted soils.

Another “destroyer” of soil is organic pollution, which primarily originates from petroleum and its cracking products, pesticides, and synthetic organic materials (such as plastic mulch films, among others).

Humic acid can immobilize pollutants in the soil by enhancing their adsorption and stability, thereby rendering them inactive, or by inducing the photolytic and chemical degradation of organic compounds via reactive free radicals, thus achieving a detoxification effect on the soil.

The humic acid “degradable mulch film,” produced from high‑grade humic acid, not only helps raise soil temperature and conserve moisture and nutrients, but also decomposes into humic‑acid organic fertilizer within 2–3 months after use, allowing crops to emerge naturally. This saves labor and time while eliminating the “white pollution” caused by conventional plastic mulch films.

3. Humic acid can be used to remediate saline-alkali soils where the groundwater table is less than 1 meter deep.

Humic acid can bind with calcium and iron ions from other soil amendments, promoting the aggregation of fine soil particles within the top 20–30 centimeters into larger, stable aggregates. This reduces capillary action in the fine soil, significantly minimizing the transport of dissolved salts to the surface and their subsequent accumulation, thereby mitigating salinization. This approach represents the most effective method for fundamentally addressing saline‑alkali soils at the source.
