During garlic cultivation, a common and frustrating issue is yellowing leaves with dried tips, which severely compromises the quality of the garlic seedlings and reduces economic returns.
Garlic is widely cultivated across China, covering a vast area and yielding high economic returns. However, during cultivation, farmers often encounter a vexing issue: yellowing leaves with dried tips, which severely compromises the quality of garlic seedlings and reduces profitability. When faced with this problem, avoid rushing to apply pesticides; first, identify the underlying cause of the yellowing. If it’s a natural phenomenon, there’s no need to worry. But if it’s due to external factors or improper management, take preventive measures promptly.
Causes of yellowing leaves in garlic:
1. Continuous monoculture over multiple years
Continuous monoculture over several years leads to the gradual buildup of pests and pathogens in the soil, resulting in severe outbreaks of diseases and insect infestations. At the same time, the soil’s nutrient reserves are steadily depleted, weakening plant growth, reducing their stress tolerance, and causing symptoms such as yellowing leaves and tip drying.
2. Improper sowing time
Garlic is a cool‑season crop, with an optimal growing temperature of 12–16°C. As global temperatures rise, the previously suitable sowing window has been shifting. If seedlings grow too large before winter, they deplete their reserves excessively, leading to yellowing leaves and dried tips; their cold tolerance declines, making them more susceptible to frost damage and premature senescence in spring.
3. Nutritional deficiency
Garlic chives have a shallow root system and weak nutrient‑absorbing capacity, so they demand high soil fertility. In particular, deficiencies in nitrogen and potassium can lead to inadequate nutrition, resulting in yellowing leaves and dried leaf tips.
What should I do if garlic leaves turn yellow?
When garlic plants develop four to five leaves, yellowing may appear. At this stage, the garlic is still in its seedling phase; although numerous roots have already emerged, the primary source of nutrients remains the bulb itself—this is a key point to keep in mind. As garlic transitions from autotrophy to heterotrophy, its root system’s ability to absorb nutrients from the soil diminishes, making leaf yellowing and tip drying quite common—and entirely normal.

During this period, about 80% of garlic plants develop yellowing leaves for this reason; therefore, no additional fertilization is needed. This condition is only temporary—once the root system’s absorptive capacity improves, the yellowing and tip‑drying will resolve on their own, and growth will gradually return to normal.
However, if the yellowing of leaves is indeed caused by nutrient deficiency, you can apply potassium dihydrogen phosphate via foliar spray—at approximately 40 grams per mu.
