Introduction to Thermosetting Coating Materials for Controlled-Release Fertilizers

The coating materials for controlled-release fertilizers are mainly of two distinct types: thermosetting resins and thermoplastic resins. Today, Controlled-release fertilizer First, the manufacturer will introduce the classification of thermosetting resin coating materials for controlled-release fertilizers, along with their relevant performance characteristics.

Thermosetting resins primarily include polyurethane resin, epoxy resin, alkyd resin, unsaturated polyester resin, phenolic resin, acrylic resin, urea resin, melamine resin, and silicone resin. Among these, alkyd resin, polyurethane, and epoxy resin are the most commonly used coating materials. The earliest controlled-release fertilizer was Osmocote, developed by Scotts, which remains the world’s leading brand in this category today.

Among currently developed products, polyurethane materials are the most common, owing to their cost-effectiveness, rapid production, and complete biodegradability, which meets environmental requirements. Alkyd resin materials are relatively inexpensive and exhibit excellent degradability. Epoxy resins offer highly stable performance, but their coating materials are costly and degrade poorly. Thermosetting resin coating processes can be solvent-based, though most are solvent-free. Technological advances have largely steered coating materials toward solvent-free formulations, as solvent-free coating technology offers unparalleled advantages: lower production costs, zero environmental pollution, faster manufacturing, minimal equipment investment, and very low energy consumption. Solvent-free controlled-release fertilizer technology represents the inevitable direction for this field.

The performance of each component of thermosetting resin coating materials is quite excellent, yet there remains room for further improvement. We believe that as research into controlled-release fertilizers intensifies, the performance and quality of thermosetting resin coating materials will continue to advance.
