Controlled-release fertilizers have become a major force in the fertilizer industry today. For fertilizers, controlled release is of paramount importance. In previous articles, we’ve shared plenty of information on this topic. Today, Nongda Fertilizer, a leading manufacturer of controlled-release fertilizers, will provide a detailed overview of the three types of release curves associated with these products.

Three Release Curves of Controlled-Release Fertilizers

Controlled-release fertilizers are now among the leading players in the fertilizer industry. For fertilizers, controlled release is of paramount importance. In previous articles, we’ve already shared plenty of information about controlled-release fertilizers; today… Controlled-release fertilizer The manufacturer, Nongda Fertilizer Co., Ltd., will provide a detailed overview of the three release profiles of controlled-release fertilizers.

There are three types of release curves for controlled-release fertilizers:

1. One type is High release (the first half of the parabola), characterized by rapid release in the early stage; such films typically have a relatively thin thickness or inferior material properties.

2. The second type is constant‑rate release, meaning that, under constant temperature conditions, the daily release profile remains essentially identical. Any temperature fluctuations result in only minor deviations, primarily because this coating material lacks swelling properties and its micropores or pores maintain a fixed size.

3. The third type is an “S”-shaped release curve, which is highly ideal; typically, this kind of fertilizer exhibits very slow release in the early stage, with the release rate accelerating in the later stage.

There are two approaches to achieving S release: one involves a very thick coating that, however, is made of a material with limited intrinsic performance; as the coating swells over time, its micropores or voids expand, typically at a high cost. The other approach uses a highly robust membrane material with a very low coating-to‑core ratio, enabling ultra‑low initial release; as the membrane swells later on, its micropores or voids enlarge, accelerating the release rate.

As illustrated by the three distinct release curves provided by the controlled-release fertilizer manufacturer, these fertilizers exhibit a highly principled release profile, delivering nutrients gradually in response to the crop’s growth stage, thereby better ensuring their vital benefits for plant development.
