Controlled-release fertilizers are among the most popular types of fertilizers available today, a reputation built on users’ accumulated experience. Their quality and performance consistently meet high expectations. Below, Nongda Fertilizer Industry, a leading manufacturer of controlled-release fertilizers, will explain the release curve of these products and highlight their key characteristics.

There are three types of release profiles for controlled-release fertilizers. The first is a high‑release profile—resembling the first half of a parabola—characterized by rapid initial release; such coatings are typically thin or made from materials with inferior performance. The second is a constant‑rate release, where, under steady temperature conditions, the daily release rate remains essentially uniform; any minor variations due to temperature fluctuations arise because the coating material lacks swelling properties and maintains a consistent pore size. The third is an “S”‑shaped release curve, which is highly desirable: this type exhibits very slow release in the early stages, followed by an accelerated release in the later stages.
There are two approaches to achieving S release: one involves a very thick coating that, however, is made of a material with limited intrinsic performance; as the coating swells over time, its micropores or voids expand, typically at a high cost. The other approach uses a highly robust membrane material with a very low coating-to‑core ratio, enabling ultra‑low initial release followed by accelerated release as the membrane swells and its micropores or voids enlarge.
Controlled-release fertilizers exhibit three types of release profiles: an initial rapid release, a uniform-rate release, and an “S”-shaped release curve. The S‑shaped release, in turn, can manifest in two distinct patterns. However, each of these release mechanisms has its own set of advantages and disadvantages.
