Soil pH: How to assess and improve it?

Release Date:

2019-11-20

When caring for flowers and plants, we often overlook a crucial factor—one that’s repeatedly emphasized in gardening advice: soil pH. Don’t dismiss this as insignificant; neglecting it can easily lead to your plants withering. Below, Nongda Feiyе, a manufacturer of soil conditioners, provides an overview.

How do you assess and improve soil pH?

When caring for flowers and plants, we often overlook a crucial factor—one that’s mentioned in every gardening guide: soil pH. Don’t dismiss this as insignificant; if you ignore it, your plants may very well wither and die. Below… Soil conditioner The manufacturer, Nongda Fertilizer Co., Ltd., is here to introduce itself.

Soil pH is classified into five categories: strongly acidic soils (pH less than 5), acidic soils (pH 5.0–6.5), neutral soils (pH 6.5–7.5), alkaline soils (pH 7.5–8.5), and strongly alkaline soils (pH greater than 8.5).

Soil pH can directly affect the uptake of nutrients and the growth and development of flowering plants, while also influencing the availability of various nutrients in the soil. Before addressing how to adjust soil pH, it’s essential to first understand which plants prefer acidic conditions and which favor alkaline ones.

Acid-loving flowers

Common acid-loving flowering plants include azaleas, camellias, sasanquas, red maples, magnolias, gardenias, champak, begonias, begonias of the tuberous type, golden camellias, kumquats, cherry blossoms, five-needle pines, podocarps, and most foliage‑ornamental plants.

Alkaliphilic flowers

Common alkaline‑loving flowering plants include: pomegranate, Chinese plum, oleander, forsythia, climbing rose, goji berry, hibiscus, seaside hibiscus, wisteria, winter jasmine, lilac, Asian pear, acacia, paulownia, fig, tamarisk, black pine, apricot, pear, rose, juniper, Chinese juniper, Chinese arborvitae, and flame tree, among others.

01 How can you determine whether soil is acidic or alkaline?

Soil color

In typical mountainous and forested areas, the soil in ravines—rich in humus—is usually black or brown, relatively loose and fertile, with excellent aeration and drainage; it is an outstanding acidic humus-rich soil. Examples include pine-needle humus and peat humus.

Alkaline soils typically exhibit light colors such as white or yellow. In some saline–alkali regions, the soil surface is often covered with a layer of white salt crust.

01 How can you determine whether soil is acidic or alkaline?

Terrestrial plants

When collecting soil samples, observe the vegetation on the surface: soils where pines, cypresses, and rhododendrons grow are typically acidic.

Meanwhile, the soils in areas where millet, sorghum, and salicornia are cultivated are predominantly alkaline.

01 How can you determine whether soil is acidic or alkaline?

Hand feel

The simplest method is to feel it: if it feels soft in your hand and easily crumbles when you release it, forming no clumps, then the soil is acidic.

If the soil feels firm in your hand and tends to clump easily when you release it, it is alkaline.

01 How can you determine whether soil is acidic or alkaline?

Watering

In acidic soil, water infiltrates quickly, without forming white bubbles, and the water surface remains relatively cloudy.

In alkaline soils, after watering, infiltration is slower; white bubbles rise to the surface, forming a frothy film, and sometimes a layer of white alkaline residue can be seen on the soil surface.

01 How can you determine whether soil is acidic or alkaline?

pH test paper

If you’re unsure, you can use pH test paper in a scientific manner: place a small amount of soil sample into distilled water, let it dissolve for a while, then immerse the pH test strip in the solution and let it sit for 2 seconds. Remove the strip and compare its color to the provided color chart. If the pH is greater than 7, the soil is alkaline; if it’s less than 7, the soil is acidic.

02 Soil improvement methods?

Improve acidic soil

Lime can be used to neutralize acidity and increase soil organic matter, thereby improving soil pH. Alkaline fertilizers such as ammonium bicarbonate, ammonia solution, calcium cyanamide, calcium‑magnesium phosphate fertilizer, rock phosphate powder, and wood ash can also be applied.

02 Soil improvement methods?

Improve alkaline soils

Acidic fertilizers such as lead sulfate, ferrous sulfate, sulfur powder, ammonium sulfate, ammonium nitrate, ammonium chloride, calcium superphosphate, and potassium dihydrogen phosphate can be applied to achieve targeted soil neutralization. Alternatively, applying more organic manure can help improve soil quality.

Beer and vinegar are mildly acidic and can help adjust soil pH, promoting healthier growth in acid-loving plants—just be sure to use them in moderation.
