Humic acid: an essential agricultural input that enhances the quality of farm products.

Release Date:

2019-08-19

Today, many farmers recognize that humic acid is highly efficient, environmentally friendly, and delivers excellent results. Yet, most are unclear about the underlying mechanisms and cannot explain why it works so well. In fact, the true active ingredient in humic‑acid fertilizers is fulvic acid. Fulvic acid has the lowest molecular weight, the highest biological activity, the best water solubility, and the strongest anti‑flocculation properties among all humic‑acid components—it is the very essence of humic acid’s beneficial effects. In practical agricultural applications, fulvic acid consistently demonstrates the most stable and optimal performance.

Nowadays, many farmers know that Humic acid It’s highly efficient, environmentally friendly, and delivers excellent results, yet many people don’t understand the underlying principles or can’t explain why it works. In fact, the real active ingredient in humic‑acid fertilizers is fulvic acid! Humic acid It is the humic acid fraction with the lowest molecular weight, highest activity, best water solubility, and strongest anti‑flocculation capacity, representing the essence of humic acid’s active constituents. In practical agricultural applications, fulvic acid delivers the most stable and optimal performance.

Humic acid enhances the enzymatic processes involved in the synthesis and metabolism of sugars, starches, proteins, fats, and various vitamins. It can stimulate the activity of polysaccharide‑degrading enzymes, converting polysaccharides into soluble monosaccharides and thereby increasing fruit sweetness; it also raises the ratios of total sugars to nicotine, as well as potassium to chlorine, in tobacco leaves, improving leaf quality; furthermore, it boosts the total sugar content and vitamin C levels in melons such as watermelon and Hami melon.

1. Regulate enzymatic reactions and enhance plant physiological activities.

Enzymes are biological catalysts that drive plant life processes, and their activity is quantified by enzyme activity. Fulvic acid can stimulate the activity of polysaccharide‑degrading enzymes, promoting the hydrolysis of pectin in young cell walls and softening the cell wall, thereby facilitating cell elongation and division as well as both longitudinal and lateral growth. Consequently, it markedly promotes the growth of young cells in newly formed tissues, with particularly pronounced effects on the root meristem.

Humic acid, rich in carboxyl groups, can inhibit the activity of auxin oxidase, thereby reducing auxin degradation and increasing its concentration. This promotes root and stem growth, accelerates rooting, enhances the development of lateral roots, increases root biomass, and extends root length, ultimately improving the crop’s ability to absorb water and nutrients.

Humic acid can enhance the activity of saccharifying enzymes, starch phosphorylase, and several enzymes involved in the synthesis of proteins and fats, thereby increasing the biosynthesis and accumulation of sugars, starch, proteins, lipids, nucleic acids, vitamins, and other substances. It also stimulates the activity of transferases, accelerating the translocation of various metabolic products from stems and leaves or roots to fruits and seeds, thus directly improving both the yield and quality of crops.
Humic acid: an essential agricultural input that enhances the quality of farm products.
2. Increase chlorophyll content and enhance photosynthesis.

Humic acid can enhance plants’ uptake and translocation of secondary and micronutrients, significantly increase chlorophyll content in leaves, and inhibit the activity of proteolytic enzymes, thereby slowing down chlorophyll degradation.

Humic acid can enhance the activity of protective enzymes and mitigate the damage caused by reactive oxygen species to chlorophyll. These effects help maintain and increase chlorophyll content, promote photosynthesis, and boost the accumulation of photosynthetic products.

3. Enhance respiration

Humic acid can enhance the activity of respiratory enzymes, particularly by stimulating the activity of terminal oxidases, thereby boosting respiration. This process continuously releases energy and generates numerous metabolic intermediates, which are supplied to plants to support their vital physiological activities. With enhanced respiration, both root absorption and biosynthetic processes are promoted.

4. Promote the absorption and transport of mineral elements

Many micronutrient elements, such as Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn, B, and Mo, are integral components of enzymes or coenzymes involved in plant metabolic processes, or they exert significant effects on the activity of various enzymes and on plant stress tolerance; some also serve as structural constituents of cellular components.

Humic acid It can form soluble complexes (chelates) with mineral elements in the soil, and this property of fulvic acid enhances crop uptake of many micronutrients. Moreover, research has shown that fulvic acid is the humic substance with the lowest molecular weight and the highest biological activity, representing the most potent fraction of humic acids.
