What are the effects of humic acid on soil fertility and the ecological environment?

Release Date:

2019-08-07

Humic acid is a natural mixture of organic macromolecular compounds, serving as a natural bacteriostatic and insecticidal agent that is green, highly effective, and safe. It plays a dual role in pest and disease management, acting as both a fertilizer and a pesticide while exerting multifaceted regulatory effects. Widely distributed in nature, its unique physiological functions have led to its extensive application in agricultural production in recent years.

Humic acid It is a mixture of natural organic macromolecular compounds, It is a natural bacteriostatic and insecticidal agent—green, highly effective, and safe—offering both fertilizing and pesticidal benefits while providing multi‑faceted regulatory effects in pest and disease management. Widely present in nature, it has been extensively applied in agricultural production in recent years owing to its unique physiological functions.

The Impact of Humic Acid on Soil Fertility Formation

1. Humic acid is an active participant and facilitator in soil formation. As is well known, soil’s inorganic components originate from the weathering of rocks, and the breakdown of rocks and minerals by organisms and their metabolic products, along with the processes of soil formation, play a crucial role. Moreover, the contribution of humic substances formed after the death of organisms should not be overlooked.

2. Humic acid both promotes and constrains the migration, immobilization, and leaching of soil metal ions and trace elements.

3. Humic acid serves as a stabilizer of soil structure. Our company has found that in chernozem soils, humic acid forms primary aggregates (microaggregates) through insoluble HA–Ca complexes, and this type of association significantly contributes to the stability of soil structure.

4. Humic acids influence the soil’s cation exchange capacity. Cation exchange capacity (CEC) is an important indicator of soil fertility; humic acids act as stabilizers of soil structure and determine the soil’s ability to retain nutrients.

The Impact of Humic Acid on the Ecological Environment

1. Humic acid remediates water pollution: As a natural, weak organic macromolecule, humic acid induces precipitation with inorganic, organic, and heavy-metal ions, thereby reducing pollutant concentrations and clarifying the water. In natural waters, humic acid exists as an organic colloid with a large surface area and high surface energy, enabling it to adsorb various cationic and anionic compounds and playing a crucial role in the purification and transformation of inorganic pollutants.

2. Humic acid for the remediation of heavy-metal‑contaminated soils. Once heavy metals in the soil are adsorbed and accumulated by plants, they can be bioconcentrated through the food chain and enter the bodies of humans and animals, posing serious health risks and leading to diseases such as cancer. Conditions like Minamata disease and Itai‑itai disease serve as classic examples.

3. Humic acid–mediated soil remediation Pollution and the restoration of desertified land. At present, many regions around the world are grappling with the growing challenge of desertification. The use of humic acid‑based water‑retaining agents, humic acid‑complexed urea, and humic acid‑coated desert‑control mulch films has proven highly effective in rehabilitating degraded soils, while also reducing costs and boosting the survival rates of sand‑stabilizing vegetation.

The application of humic acids in soil not only enhances soil fertility but also helps ensure a cleaner and safer food chain. Humic substances are invaluable resources for purifying the biosphere and improving the ecological environment; fundamentally embracing their use will enable humic acids to play an even greater role in agriculture.
