Humic acid is the most essential core component of soil humus. It is a low‑molecular‑weight, fully water‑soluble organic aromatic substance formed through the repeated decomposition of organic matter, and it represents the finest humic acid fraction in soil. Moreover, it serves as the key substance underlying the development of soil aggregate structure, thereby supporting long‑term goals of increased yield, improved product quality, and soil health—ultimately addressing issues related to crop quality. I. Water Retention: Humic acid is a colloidal organic material that loosens the soil, enhances its water‑holding capacity, improves aeration and moisture retention, and helps prevent drought. As a result, it ensures favorable soil conditions in terms of water, air, and temperature, creating an optimal environment for seed germination and seedling growth. II. Amelioration of Saline–Alkaline Soils: Humic acid…

Humic acid It is the premier core constituent of soil humus—small‑molecular‑weight, fully water‑soluble organic aromatic compounds formed through the repeated decomposition of organic matter. It represents the highest‑quality humic acid component in soil and serves as the key substance underlying the development of soil aggregate structure, thereby enabling long‑term goals of increased yield, improved product quality, and soil health, and ultimately addressing crop‑quality challenges.
Eight Major Functions and Four Key Benefits of Fulvic Acid You Need to Know

  I. Water Retention

Humic acid It is an organic substance with colloidal properties that loosens the soil, enhances water-holding capacity, improves aeration and moisture retention, and provides drought resistance, thereby creating favorable conditions for soil moisture, air, and temperature, which are conducive to seed germination and seedling growth.

  II. Amelioration of Saline-Alkali Soils

Humic acid has a low molecular weight and high activity; it can adsorb harmful cations in the soil, thereby reducing soil salinity and mitigating the adverse effects of salts on seeds and seedlings, thus improving saline–alkali soils.

III. Drought Resistance and Cold Tolerance

  1. Foliar application of humic acid can cause stomatal closure, thereby reducing transpiration in plants.

  2. Humic acid has a dark color, which enhances its absorption of solar energy; when decomposed by microorganisms, it releases heat, raising soil temperature and thereby providing cold‑resistance.

  IV. Disease and Pest Resistance

Humic acid can enhance enzyme activity within plants and strengthen their resistance.

  V. Prevention of Heavy Metal Pollution

Humic acid participates in ion-exchange reactions in the soil, adsorbing and immobilizing heavy metal ions and preventing their entry into the biogeochemical cycle.

  VI. Enhancing Fertilizer Efficiency

  1. Nitrogen fixation: When nitrogen is applied to the soil, it readily volatilizes into the atmosphere or is lost through runoff into rivers. Fulvic acid can adsorb soil‑bound nitrogen, reducing its volatilization and leaching and thereby enhancing its utilization efficiency.

  2. Phosphorus solubilization: When phosphorus is applied to the soil, it is readily immobilized by soil particles. Fulvic acid can chelate with phosphorus, releasing it from the soil and making it available for plant uptake, thereby enhancing phosphorus use efficiency.

  3. Activating potassium: Most of the potassium applied to the soil exists in the form of potassium salts, which cannot be directly absorbed by crops. Humic acids, through their ion-exchange capacity, can convert poorly soluble potassium into soluble forms, increasing the available potassium in the soil and enhancing potassium utilization efficiency.

  4. Micronutrients: Humic acid can form chelates with poorly soluble micronutrients, producing highly soluble humic‑acid–micronutrient complexes that are readily absorbed by crops, thereby enhancing the uptake of micronutrients through both roots and foliar application.

VII. Promoting Crop Growth and Development

  1. Fulvic acid can stimulate root growth, ultimately significantly enhancing the crop’s ability to absorb water and nutrients.

  2. The stimulatory effect of humic acid can promote vigorous vegetative growth in the aboveground parts of plants, as evidenced by increased plant height, stem diameter, and leaf thickness.

  3. Fulvic acid has a favorable effect on tillering and reducing the rate of empty and shriveled grains, thereby increasing the 1,000-grain weight and boosting grain yield.

  8. Adjusting Soil pH

Humic acid contains a high density of functional groups, enabling it to bind with both acids and bases, thereby allowing the soil pH to be adjusted according to the specific needs of the crop.

Four major functions

  1. Humic acid Can improve the soil

Humic acid is a colloidal organic substance that enhances soil aggregate structure, making the soil loose and improving its water‑holding capacity. It promotes rapid drying while ensuring good aeration and moisture retention, protects against dampness, and helps conserve water and maintain soil moisture, thereby preventing drought. As a result, it creates favorable conditions for soil moisture, air circulation, and temperature, which are ideal for seed germination and seedling growth.

Humic acids can ameliorate saline–alkali soils; in particular, fulvic acid, with its abundance of active functional groups and high cation exchange capacity, can adsorb and immobilize substantial amounts of harmful cations from the soil’s soluble salts, thereby reducing soil salinity and mitigating the adverse effects of salts on seeds and seedlings. Applying a fulvic‑acid‑based compound fertilizer significantly enhances both the emergence and establishment rates of crops on saline–alkali land, while promoting vigorous growth.

  2. Fulvic acid has a stimulating effect on crop growth and development.

During crop growth, every physiological metabolic process depends on enzymatic activity. Water-soluble humic acid molecules, absorbed by the roots or foliar surfaces, can regulate plant physiological functions, enhancing the activity of terminal oxidases in root systems and intracellular saccharifying enzymes, thereby increasing the respiratory intensity of roots and leaves and promoting nutrient uptake.

Humic acid is a growth regulator for cotton. It promotes early root development and germination, increases seedling emergence rates—particularly under low-temperature conditions—and stimulates root elongation, resulting in an extensive root system with a larger nutrient‑absorbing surface area and enhanced uptake capacity. It also fosters the vegetative growth of the aboveground parts, leading to taller plants, thicker stems, and greater dry matter accumulation. Furthermore, it enhances respiratory activity in cotton leaves, boosts photosynthesis, and produces lush, dark green foliage with elevated chlorophyll content.

  3. Humic acid exhibits a synergistic effect with chemical fertilizers.

The low availability of macronutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium allows humic acids in the soil to fix nitrogen, solubilize phosphorus, and release potassium, with a particularly pronounced synergistic effect on potassium fertilizers.
