Humic acid substances play a crucial role in mitigating the adverse effects of agricultural drought. Concurrently, the gradual introduction of policies—such as “zero growth” in chemical fertilizer use, reducing fertilizer application while enhancing efficiency, and substituting organic fertilizers for chemical ones—has sparked a transformative wave in the agrochemical sector, promoting “scientific fertilizer management and green development.” 1. Humic acid reduces stomatal aperture, thereby decreasing water transpiration. It can diminish the degree to which plant leaf stomata open, curbing transpiration from leaf surfaces, thus lowering water consumption, improving the plant’s internal water balance, ensuring normal growth and development under drought conditions, and enhancing drought resistance. 2. Humic acid promotes root system development,

Humic acid Substances of this type play a crucial role in mitigating the adverse impacts of agricultural drought. Meanwhile, the successive introduction of supporting policies—such as “zero growth” in fertilizer use, reducing fertilizer application while enhancing efficiency, and substituting organic fertilizers for chemical ones—has sparked a transformative wave in the agrochemical sector, promoting the principles of “scientific fertilizer management and green development.”

  1. Fulvic acid reduces stomatal aperture and decreases water transpiration.

Humic acid can reduce the degree of stomatal opening in plant leaves and decrease transpiration, thereby lowering water consumption, improving the plant’s internal water balance, ensuring normal growth and development under drought conditions, and enhancing drought resistance.

  2. Humic acid Promote root development and enhance root vitality.

Applied with humic acid, Humic acid Subsequently, this manifests in crops as a well‑developed root system and an increased number of secondary roots. At the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, comparative trials using ammonium sulfate and ammonium humate revealed that ammonium humate can boost rice respiration intensity by 18.2% and photosynthetic rate by 12.2%. Field observations further showed that seed‑treated plants exhibited vigorous growth, an enhanced root‑to‑shoot ratio, delayed senescence of lower leaves, a greater number of green leaves, an expanded photosynthetic leaf area, and increased dry matter accumulation.

According to reports, fulvic acid also exerts a significant effect on the root growth and vigor of crops such as maize, rice, peanuts, and sweet potatoes. When maize seeds are treated with 0.5% fulvic acid, the average root length increases by 3.6 cm, the number of roots rises by 1.3, and dry matter weight gains 1.45 g, thereby enhancing the uptake of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium from the soil. This treatment proves effective whether applied as seed dressing, seed soaking, or foliar spray.

  3. The effect of humic acid on soil water-holding capacity

Foliar application of humic acid reduces crop transpiration, thereby slowing the rate of soil moisture depletion and increasing soil water content. Moreover, humic acid improves soil structure, helping to maintain soil moisture balance, conserving water and enhancing soil moisture retention, thus enabling crops to successfully withstand periods of drought.

  4. Fulvic acid enhances the cold tolerance of crops.

According to experiments conducted by institutions such as the Institute of Biology of the Henan Academy of Sciences and the Changsha Institute of Modernization of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, applying humic acid to rice, winter wheat, rapeseed, apple, pear, peach, grape, and greenhouse vegetables all enhances the crops’ cold tolerance and helps prevent and mitigate low-temperature damage. The primary mechanism is that humic acid can stimulate the activity of certain enzymes within plants and modulate osmotic regulatory substances, thereby providing protective effects to cell membranes.

The efficacy of humic acid in crop applications and its degree of influence on transpiration resistance vary, but extensive experimental results indicate that the underlying mechanisms are essentially the same.
