What exactly are the effects of controlled-release nitrogen–potassium fertilizer on crops?

During their growth and development, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium fertilizers are the three essential nutrients for plants.

During the growth and development of crops, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium fertilizers are the three essential macronutrients. However, as agricultural practices increasingly emphasize reducing chemical fertilizer use, it is crucial to adopt scientific fertilization strategies to accelerate crop growth. By carefully formulating fertilizer blends and integrating soil with organic and inorganic matter as well as nutrients, we can better manage fertilizer application. So, what specific benefits do controlled-release nitrogen–potassium fertilizers offer to crops?

Controlled-release nitrogen–potassium fertilizers, when applied using specific technologies, enable the gradual release of available nutrients to crops over time, allowing for a 10% reduction in application rates compared with conventional fertilization—thus aligning perfectly with the national goal of improving fertilizer use efficiency.

Characteristics of Controlled-Release Nitrogen-Potassium Fertilizer Products (Using Garlic as an Example)

1. This product is formulated based on the nutrient requirements of garlic, pioneering a specialized controlled-release nitrogen–potassium fertilizer for garlic that meets the crop’s nutritional needs at every growth stage. It enables single-application fertilization without the need for supplemental topdressing, saving labor and time while boosting yield and efficiency.

2. Dual control of nitrogen and potassium, with precise controlled-release formulation: nutrients are efficiently utilized in the early growth stage, ensuring robust seedlings without excessive vegetative growth before winter; in the later stages, adequate nutrient supply sustains prolonged fertilizer efficacy without nutrient depletion, promoting bolting and bulb enlargement, thereby significantly enhancing fertilizer use efficiency.

3. High‑content active humic acid improves soil compaction, promotes robust garlic growth, mitigates continuous‑cropping problems, and enhances the commercial quality of garlic.

4. A balanced formulation of controlled-release nutrients and activated humic acid, combined with natural bioactive substances, enhances garlic’s cold and drought resistance, ensures safe overwintering, and provides protection against late spring frosts.

Controlled-release nitrogen-potassium fertilizer technology

Controlled-release nitrogen–potassium fertilizer is produced using a “fertilizer‑encapsulated‑fertilizer” process. The manufacturing principle is similar to making tangyuan (sweet rice balls): it features a core and multiple layers. The innermost layer consists of nitrogen fertilizer, which is sequentially enveloped by potassium fertilizer, phosphate fertilizer, and various micronutrient fertilizers, forming an outer coating. This layered encapsulation results in a granular structure that integrates multiple nutrients into a single particle. When the granule is split open, the distinct layers are clearly visible.

Place the controlled-release nitrogen–potassium fertilizer and the conventional compound fertilizer in two glass cups filled with water, and stir gently for a few minutes. The compound fertilizer will dissolve relatively quickly, with its granules shrinking or dissolving completely and the water becoming cloudy, whereas the controlled-release nitrogen–potassium fertilizer will not dissolve; the water remains clear, free of impurities, and bubbles emerge around the granules.

Precautions When Purchasing Controlled-Release Nitrogen-Potassium Fertilizer

a. Examine the appearance: Controlled-release nitrogen–potassium fertilizer exhibits uniform granules, does not cake, and does not absorb moisture. A longitudinal cross-section reveals that the fertilizer is coated with a resin or sulfur layer—essentially, a specialized outer coating applied to conventional fertilizers. This coating ensures the gradual release of essential nutrients at different stages of crop growth, thereby significantly enhancing the fertilizer’s nutrient-use efficiency.

b. It employs coated‑release technology, which generally does not cause seed or seedling burn. However, there are various types of controlled‑release N‑K fertilizers; different crops should be matched with the appropriate formulation, and it is best to avoid mixing such fertilizers with seeds.
