What effects does humic acid have on soil?

Release Date:

2019-06-21

Soil is the stronghold of microorganisms and serves as their natural growth and reproduction medium. Humic acid permeates all aspects of soil life, acting as the “life core” of the soil.

As everyone knows, soil is a thriving habitat for microorganisms and serves as their natural growth and reproduction medium. Humic acid It permeates the life of the soil and serves as its “life core.” Without humic acid, the soil would lose its vitality. Accordingly, clarifying the relationships among “soil–humic acid–microorganisms” is of great significance for promoting sustainable soil productivity. So, what benefits does humic acid bring to the soil?

1. Humic acid can improve the physical and chemical properties of soil.

Humic acid can promote the formation of soil aggregate structures, regulate soil pH, and balance soil water, nutrient, air, and temperature conditions. It enhances soil cation exchange capacity, achieves acid–base equilibrium, improves the soil’s ability to retain water and nutrients, and stimulates microbial activity, increasing the populations of aerobic bacteria, actinomycetes, and cellulose-degrading microorganisms. This accelerates the decomposition and transformation of organic matter, facilitates the release of essential nutrients, and makes them more readily available for crop uptake.

2. Humic acid applied to the soil can improve crop quality.

Humic acid can form complexes or chelates with micronutrients, enhancing the translocation of these micronutrients from the roots to the leaves and other plant parts, thereby regulating the ratio and balance between macronutrients and micronutrients, and boosting enzymatic processes involved in the synthesis and metabolism of sugars, starches, proteins, fats, and various vitamins.

It can enhance enzyme activity, converting polysaccharides into soluble monosaccharides, thereby promoting the synthesis and accumulation of starch, proteins, and lipids. It also accelerates the translocation of primary metabolic products from stems and leaves or root systems to fruits and seeds, resulting in plump, robust fruit.
What effects does humic acid have on soil?
3. Humic acid stimulates root growth and other physiological metabolic processes.

Humic acid contains a variety of active functional groups that can enhance crop vitality, stimulate physiological metabolism, and promote growth and development. For example, humic acid can induce earlier seed germination and improve emergence rates, with particularly pronounced effects at low temperatures. It also stimulates root development, enabling seedlings to establish roots more rapidly, increasing root biomass and extending root length, thereby enhancing the crop’s ability to absorb water and nutrients.

4. Humic acid can enhance plant stress resistance.

After prolonged exposure to heavy applications of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, soil fertility is compromised. Humic acid can enhance a plant’s tolerance to drought, cold, salinity–alkalinity, and pests and diseases by modulating its growth dynamics, thereby improving the crop’s intrinsic stress‑resistance and bolstering its ability to withstand biotic and abiotic stresses.

5. Humic acid can enhance plants’ drought resistance and cold tolerance.

Humic acid can reduce the degree of stomatal opening in plant leaves, thereby decreasing transpiration and lowering water loss, which improves the plant’s internal water balance and ensures normal growth and development under drought conditions, enhancing drought resistance. At the same time, humic acid exhibits strong surface activity, exerts inhibitory effects on fungi, boosts cold tolerance, promotes the uptake of inorganic nutrients, prevents rot and root rot diseases, and reduces pest and disease incidence.

6. Humic acid can enhance nutrient utilization.

Humic acid possesses strong ion-exchange and adsorption capacities, which help reduce the loss of ammonium nitrogen from ammonium bicarbonate, enhance the utilization efficiency of nitrogen fertilizers, minimize urea volatilization, and promote root uptake of phosphorus. Additionally, humic acid can absorb and store potassium ions, facilitating the slow release of potassium fertilizer, increasing the amount of readily available potassium, and boosting the content of quick‑acting potassium. This also better enables crops to absorb sufficient micronutrients, thereby promoting the growth of roots and foliage.

That's all. Humic acid It confers benefits to the soil, thereby promoting healthier crop growth and higher yields. However, humic acid can also have adverse effects on plants; for instance, at excessively high concentrations, it may inhibit plant growth and increase susceptibility to root pathogens. Therefore, avoid arbitrarily increasing the application rate—use the recommended dosage.
