Dr., Researcher at the Institute of Agricultural Resources and Regional Planning, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences; Doctoral Supervisor; one of the first batch of distinguished talents appointed to a second-level position by the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences; Outstanding Agricultural Research Talent of the Ministry of Agriculture; Chief Scientist of the Ministry of Agriculture’s Innovative Team on Novel Fertilizers; Chief Scientist of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences’ Innovation Team on Fertilizer and Fertilization Technologies; and recipient of the China Young Agricultural Science and Technology Award.

Currently serves as the Director of the Dezhou Saline–Alkali Soil Improvement Experimental Station of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Vice President and Secretary-General of the Chinese Society for Plant Nutrition and Fertilizers, Vice President and Secretary-General of the Industrial Technology Innovation Alliance for Value-Added Fertilizers, a member of the National Technical Committee for Standardization of Fertilizers and Soil Conditioners, an Executive Director of the China Humic Acid Industry Association, and Deputy Head of the Ministry of Agriculture’s Expert Group on Scientific Fertilization. He is also the inventor and founder of value-added fertilizers and has long been engaged in research on novel fertilizers and fertilizer application systems.

In the fields of novel fertilizers and fertilization systems, since the Tenth Five-Year Plan, he has led major research projects, including the National 863 Program, the National Key R&D Program, the National Science and Technology Support Program, the preliminary phase of the 973 Program, and EU international cooperation initiatives.

Major Scientific and Technological Innovations and Academic Contributions:

1) The “water–fertilizer–root spatiotemporal coupling” theory for the efficient utilization of fertilizer nutrients, along with the principle of “integrated optimization of organic materials and chemical fertilizers to enhance the efficient use of fertilizer nutrients,” has been proposed, laying a theoretical foundation for the optimized design of fertilizer nutrient release and supply and for the development of organic–inorganic compound fertilizers.

2) The proposal to pursue a development strategy for China’s fertilizer sector that prioritizes “quality over quantity” and to establish a national green fertilizer system—encompassing green raw materials, green manufacturing, green products, green distribution, and green application—has been widely recognized and embraced by the academic community, the industry, and the government, providing a strategic framework for advancing the upgrading of China’s fertilizer industry in the new era.

3) The “fertilizer‑efficacy response method” and the “integrated nutrient balance method for farmland soils” were developed, providing the theoretical framework and methodologies for formulating region‑specific compound fertilizers. These approaches have furnished the theoretical and methodological foundation for advancing the specialization, regional standardization, and scientific optimization of compound fertilizer formulations in China.

4) A new approach has been pioneered for developing green, high-efficiency fertilizer products through the scientific formulation of trace bioactive organic synergists with chemical fertilizers, thereby overcoming the technological bottlenecks of large-scale production and low cost associated with such products. This innovation provides an advanced technical pathway for the green transformation and upgrading of China’s fertilizer industry and has opened up a new sector for value-added fertilizers. The newly developed series of value-added fertilizer products—including zinc‑humic acid urea, alginic acid urea, and cereal‑derived urea—as well as zinc‑humic acid/alginic acid ammonium phosphate and zinc‑humic acid/alginic acid compound fertilizers—have been commercialized by more than 40 major domestic enterprises, with a total production capacity exceeding 20 million tons.

5) The research achievements have received 14 scientific and technological awards, including the Second Prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, the First Prize of the Shandong Province Science and Technology Progress Award, the Second Prize of the Beijing Science and Technology Award, the Dabeinong Plant Nutrition Award, the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences Outstanding Innovation Award, and the China Invention Patent Excellence Award. The researcher has served as chief editor and published more than 20 books, authored over 200 academic papers, obtained authorization for 26 national invention patents, and chaired the development of more than 40 enterprise- and industry‑related standards.
