Key Management Practices for Apple Trees in July

Release Date:

2019-04-08

July falls in the height of summer, with both air and soil temperatures remaining high. The second flush of root growth in fruit trees gradually weakens and may even come to a halt, yet apple flower bud differentiation is still at its peak. This month is prone to natural disasters such as extreme heat, torrential rains, hailstorms, strong winds, and drought. Fruit trees are also susceptible to pests and diseases, and fruits may suffer from sunscald. Therefore, orchard management should be given utmost attention.

I. Emphasize pest and disease control.

In the latter half of this month, apply a fungicide—such as Nongkang, Kasugamycin, Iprodione + Carbendazim, Imidacloprid + Iprodione, Epoxiconazole, Myclobutanil, or Propiconazole—to control ring spot, early leaf fall, and anthracnose. When the average mite population exceeds two per leaf, mix in an insecticide—such as Fenbutatin Oxide + Pyridaben, Avermectin, Chlorpyrifos + Cypermethrin emulsifiable concentrate, Carbosulfan emulsifiable concentrate, or Wanling—to control red spider mites, while also providing control against peach small moth, leaf miners, and other pests.

II. Loosen the soil to conserve moisture.

         1. Mulching around the tree trunk can lower soil temperature and enhance the soil’s ability to retain water and nutrients. In orchards where tree‑trunk mulching has not yet been implemented, it is advisable to promptly apply mulch between rows or across the entire orchard floor.

         2. In orchards with abundant weeds, perform inter-row cultivation and weeding to improve air circulation beneath the tree canopy, reduce orchard humidity, and minimize the risk of disease occurrence (higher orchard humidity increases the likelihood of disease).

III. Drought resistance and flood prevention

Watering is essential during periods of high temperature and drought, as leaf photosynthetic capacity declines rapidly when temperatures exceed 35°C. Under such conditions, insufficient moisture can make trees and fruits particularly susceptible to sunscald. In the event of heavy rainfall this month, ensure proper drainage to prevent waterlogging. Prolonged waterlogging around fruit tree roots can suffocate the root system, impairing its normal growth and nutrient uptake; in severe cases, it may lead to root rot, tree decline, or even complete tree death.

IV. Prune promptly

         1. Throughout the entire month, pinching and branch pulling can be carried out; thereafter, any upright new shoots that emerge on the back of the branches should be promptly removed.

         2. Excessive branches often droop under the weight of the fruit, pressing down to the ground or overlapping with lower branches, which degrades local light conditions, resulting in poor fruit coloration and increased susceptibility to various diseases and pests. Moreover, inadequate light also affects both the quantity and quality of flower‑bud differentiation. Therefore, from this month through August, orchardists should support drooping branches with wooden stakes or suspend them with ropes to ensure even, well‑spaced distribution. To prevent sunscald, avoid working during the hottest part of midday when propping up or suspending the branches.

V. Other management measures

         1. In orchards experiencing high-temperature, drought conditions with no irrigation available, foliar spraying can be applied. Humic Acid Effervescent Granules Potassium dihydrogen phosphate solution enhances drought resistance in fruit trees and reduces the incidence of sunscald.

         2. After rainfall, be sure to gently loosen the fruit bags and open the ventilation and drainage holes to prevent the bags from sticking to the fruit and causing sunburn.
