On February 16, the Shandong Agricultural University Fertilizer Industry’s 2017 Marketing Summit and New Year Product Launch Conference was held in Hangzhou. Nearly 400 attendees—including experts and leaders from the National Agricultural Technology Extension Service Center, the National Technical Committee for Standardization of Fertilizers and Soil Conditioners, the China Humic Acid Industry Association, China Agrochemical Media, and other organizations—along with representatives of Shandong Agricultural University Fertilizer Industry’s distributors from across the country, took part in the event. Guests engaged in discussions centered on the theme “Transformation and Innovation, Winning Together for the Future.”

Chen Li, Director of the China Fertilizer Information Center, noted in her report titled “Current Status and Development Trends of China’s Fertilizer Industry” that from 2000 to 2016, the industry’s average annual production growth rate was 5.6%, while apparent fertilizer consumption grew at an average annual rate of 3.8% over the same period. This rapid expansion of production capacity coupled with steady demand growth has increasingly exacerbated the overall supply‑demand imbalance in the sector. She recommended adopting demand‑side measures such as promoting precision fertilization, adjusting fertilizer application patterns, improving application methods, and increasing the use of organic alternatives. On the supply side, she suggested reducing excess capacity, conserving energy and lowering consumption, cutting costs, restructuring product portfolios, and strengthening agrochemical services. At the same time, she urged leveraging e‑commerce platforms to innovate marketing approaches and capitalizing on the Belt and Road Initiative to expand international markets. Additionally, she advised distributors to carefully select products and partner companies, extend their reach to grassroots outlets, and offer farmers bundled service packages.

Liu Gang, Secretary-General of the National Technical Committee for Standardization of Fertilizers and Soil Conditioners and Executive Deputy Director of the National Fertilizer Quality Supervision and Inspection Center (Shanghai), outlined the release of the national standard “Determination of Fluoride in Fertilizers—Ion-Selective Electrode Method” and the industry standard “Humic Acid Compound Fertilizers,” as well as the work undertaken by Shandong Nongda Fertilizer Co., Ltd. in both undertaking and formulating these standards. He noted that Nongda Fertilizer has made outstanding contributions to the development of a comprehensive standards system for fertilizers and soil conditioners; to date, eight national and industry standards are either being issued, under review, or in the drafting stage, thereby driving progress across key sectors such as humic acid products, controlled-release fertilizers, and soil conditioners. He expressed his hope that Nongda Fertilizer will continue to uphold the university’s spirit of “technology first,” further strengthening its role in advancing the standards framework and helping more farmers produce higher‑quality fertilizers.

Regarding his participation in the development of humic acid standards, Ma Xuewen, Chairman of Shandong Nongda Fertilizer Co., Ltd., stated that the company produces its products guided by the philosophy of “harmonizing soil and fertilizer, nurturing the soil, and balancing nutrition.” Since manufacturing its first ton of humic‑acid fertilizer more than two decades ago, the company has accumulated extensive experience and continuously enhanced its technical capabilities. Nongda Fertilizer feels a strong responsibility and obligation to share these best practices with the broader community. Actively engaging in the formulation of national industry standards, the company hopes to contribute to the healthy development of the sector.

Subsequently, Qin Xiuzhi, Deputy Secretary-General of the China Humic Acid Industry Association, delivered a speech and jointly unveiled the “Nongda Fertilizer Enterprise Social Responsibility Green Book” with Ma Xuewen, Chairman of Shandong Nongda Fertilizer Technology Co., Ltd. Concurrently at the event, the award ceremony for the 2016 “Nongda Fertilizer Cup” Grain King Competition was held, along with the launch ceremony for the 2017 “Nongda Humic Acid Cup” initiative to challenge the Guinness World Record for China’s high-quality agricultural products.
