Innovating for development, we are forging a new chapter in the advancement of plant nutrition and soil‑fertilizer science. On July 22, the Eighth Members’ Congress of the Henan Provincial Soil Society and its 2016 Academic Annual Conference were successfully held at the New Century Hotel in Zhengzhou. Attending the event were leaders and experts including Feng Qi, Vice Chairman of the Henan Association for Science and Technology; Tan Jinfang, Vice President of Henan Agricultural University; Li Ming, Chief Agronomist of the Henan Provincial Department of Agriculture; Wang Junzhong, Director of the Henan Provincial Soil and Fertilizer Station; Professor Chen Jie of the School of Water Resources and Environmental Sciences at Zhengzhou University; Wei Wenxing, Assistant to the President of the Henan Academy of Agricultural Sciences; Zhao Peng, Dean of the College of Resources and Environment at Henan Agricultural University; and Zhang Yuting, Chairman of the Henan Provincial Soil Society. According to reports, the conference was hosted by the Henan Provincial Soil Society and co-organized by the Institute of Plant Nutrition and Resource Environment of the Henan Academy of Agricultural Sciences, the College of Resources and Environment of Henan Agricultural University, and the Henan Provincial Soil and Fertilizer Station.
All things grow from the soil, and as the cornerstone of food production, the importance of soil in agriculture is self‑evident. Yet for a long time, overreliance on chemical fertilizers and pesticides has led to soil compaction, declining fertility, and mounting concerns about soil health. In recent years—particularly since the issuance of the “Ten Measures for Soil Protection”—safeguarding soil health and ensuring soil safety has become a central topic of industry attention. At the recently convened Eighth Congress of the Chinese Society of Soil Science, experts and leaders repeatedly highlighted national soil issues, explored solutions to fertilizer‑induced damage, and discussed future agricultural priorities such as reducing chemical inputs while boosting yields, storing grain in the soil, and embedding advanced technologies within the land.
Excessive application of chemical fertilizers is one of the major factors contributing to the decline in China’s arable land quality. Compared with conventional fertilizers, new types of fertilizers—such as humic acid‑based fertilizers, microbial fertilizers, and soil conditioners—can reduce the amount of chemical fertilizer used and enhance nutrient use efficiency, thereby mitigating the damage to arable land quality and the environmental pollution caused by overuse of chemical fertilizers.
As a representative of the fertilizer industry, Shandong Nongda Fertilizer has continuously improved soil on more than 72 million mu of land. Given the outstanding performance of its humic acid fertilizers in crop nutrition and soil improvement, the company aligned with the conference’s theme and was invited to attend.
At the meeting venue, Ding Fangjun, Deputy General Manager of Nongda Fertilizer Company From a technical standpoint, the presentation vividly explained—using engaging language and illustrative images—the unique functions of humic acid fertilizers in improving soil health and enhancing fertilizer efficiency while reducing application rates. This earned unanimous approval from the association and all its members, who pledged to actively participate in soil‑care initiatives and promote these practices.
