The Agricultural University Humic Acid “Cup Grain King” Competition has established a public‑interest platform for promoting the proper and effective use of fertilizers, mastering advanced agricultural techniques, and benchmarking performance.

On August 27, the launch ceremony for the 2016 Shandong Grain King Competition—sponsored by Nongda Fertilizer—and the unveiling of Nongda Fertilizer’s new products were held in Haiyang, Shandong. This year’s competition honored the “Grain King” of wheat. Nearly 300 participants, including farmers, large-scale growers, and agricultural input distributors from Shandong, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, and other regions, attended the event.

It is understood that Shandong Province is one of China’s major grain-producing provinces and a key national base for commercial grain production. Grain output has grown steadily for 12 consecutive years, making Shandong the only province to maintain such a sustained increase over this period. The “Grain King” competition plays an important role in encouraging farmers to learn and apply scientific and technological advances, boost yields, enhance economic returns, and stimulate their enthusiasm, while also fostering a favorable environment that underscores the importance of agriculture and shows concern for farmers.

Based on the ecological conditions and local realities across Shandong Province, the competition organizing committee has divided the province into six major regional zones—Western Shandong, Southern Shandong, Southwestern Shandong, Northern Shandong, Central Shandong, and Eastern Shandong—covering the main and high-yield grain-producing areas in more than 130 counties across 17 cities. During the event, the organizers will dispatch leading experts to provide on-site technical guidance, helping farmers enhance their agricultural expertise and boost the economic returns of grain production.

According to Ma Xuewen, Chairman of Shandong Agricultural University Fertilizer Technology Co., Ltd., the company invested over RMB 10 million in the first half of the year to support the Corn “Grain King” Competition, yielding significant results. This year, the company will further increase its investment to continue backing the 2016 Wheat “Grain King” Competition and will award a cash prize of RMB 99,999 to the overall champion, thereby encouraging farmers to adopt scientific farming practices, enhance their cultivation techniques, and boost their enthusiasm for production.

“I was the ‘Grain King’ of corn in Shandong Province in 2010, with a yield of 1,029.6 kilograms per mu; in 2014, I again earned the title of Dezhou City’s ‘Grain King’ for corn, achieving 1,048.4 kilograms per mu. Next year, I’m aiming to become the ‘Grain King’ of wheat,” said Sun Fengzhong, from Linyi County, Dezhou, Shandong, visibly excited.

Li Chunxiang, from Pingdu, Shandong, told reporters that she farms more than 1,600 mu of land, growing black wheat. At first, lacking knowledge of management and failing to grasp the crop’s growth patterns, her yield was just over 200 kilograms per mu. After learning advanced wheat‑cultivation techniques and adopting scientific fertilization practices, she now achieves yields exceeding 450 kilograms per mu. This is her first time participating in the “Grain King” competition; she’s not seeking the title for its own sake. She also hopes to exchange insights with experts and other large-scale farmers, gaining better cultivation methods and more scientifically sound fertilization strategies to further boost wheat productivity.

This year’s Grain King Competition is co-hosted by Shandong Nongda Fertilizer Technology Co., Ltd. and other organizations.
