The State Key Laboratory jointly submitted by Nongda Fertilizer Co., Ltd. and Shandong Agricultural University has been approved for establishment.

On April 2, the State Key Laboratory of Crop Biology successfully passed the review by an expert panel from the Ministry of Science and Technology, was approved for establishment, and officially established its base at Shandong Agricultural University. This marks the first state key laboratory approved for construction among provincial universities in Shandong Province, signifying that the province now boasts a high-level research platform in the field of crop biology.

Leveraging Shandong Agricultural University’s strengths in crop biology research, the laboratory focuses on major crops such as wheat, maize, fruit trees, and vegetables. Guided by the mission of addressing critical challenges in China’s biotechnology and crop production, it pursues the goals of “high quality, high yield, high efficiency, safety, and ecological sustainability.” Adhering to an overarching strategy of “emphasizing innovation and striving for world‑class excellence” and a guiding principle of “independent innovation, strategic breakthroughs, supporting development, and leading the future,” the laboratory targets the cutting edge of global crop science, conducts multidisciplinary collaborative research, and seeks to ensure the sustainable and efficient agricultural development of the Huang–Huai–Hai region, thereby contributing to stable grain production and sustained income growth for farmers across China.

Over the past several years, during its development, the State Key Laboratory of Crop Biology has secured research funding totaling RMB 140.15 million; undertaken 228 research projects at or above the provincial and ministerial levels, including projects under the 863 Program, the 973 Program, the National Key Scientific and Technological Projects, the National Natural Science Foundation, the National Tenth Five-Year Plan for Scientific and Technological Breakthroughs, and the National Grain High-Yield Science and Technology Project; achieved 16 significant scientific and technological accomplishments at or above the provincial and ministerial levels, among which were four Second-Class Awards for National Scientific and Technological Progress and one First-Class Award for National Teaching Achievements; approved and evaluated 37 crop varieties; published more than 90 influential academic papers; authored 32 academic monographs and textbooks; and been granted 15 invention patents.

The establishment of the State Key Laboratory of Crop Biology has been the result of the dedicated efforts and collective wisdom of senior leaders and researchers. In January 2003, building upon the Ministry of Agriculture’s Key Open Laboratory for Wheat Cultivation Physiology and Genetic Improvement, as well as three Shandong Provincial Key Laboratories—Plant Genetic Engineering, Fruit Tree Biology, and Plant Molecular Biology—the laboratory was approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology to become one of the first state‑key laboratory incubation bases jointly established by provincial and ministerial authorities. It passed the construction acceptance review organized by the Ministry of Science and Technology in July 2004 and subsequently received an evaluation as a key laboratory from the same ministry in 2006. In April 2007, the Ministry of Science and Technology granted approval to initiate the establishment of the State Key Laboratory of Crop Biology.

It is reported that the Ministry of Science and Technology has announced 27 national key laboratories designated for priority development in 2007. Upon receiving this news, the university’s leadership and laboratory staff were greatly encouraged and promptly convened a special meeting to formulate the next phase of the laboratory’s development plan. They will further refine scientific objectives, identify research priorities, assemble a robust research team, attract and cultivate top talent, and upgrade and enhance the experimental research infrastructure, while establishing an operational mechanism characterized by openness, mobility, collaboration, and competition. Through concrete and sustained achievements, the laboratory aims to facilitate the transition of crop science from traditional agronomy toward modern crop biology, providing China’s crop science with a solid platform for theoretical innovation, an efficient platform for technological research, and a rich platform for resource sharing. Ultimately, the laboratory will be developed into a vital hub for cultivating high‑level innovative talent in crop science, thereby offering strong technical and human‑resource support for regional economic development and the construction of a new countryside in China.
