Fertilization Management for Greenhouse Cucumbers

Release Date:

1. Increase the application of organic fertilizers. Organic fertilizers not only supply cucumbers with a full range of nutrients for growth and development, but also reduce soil bulk density, increase soil porosity, and improve the soil’s physical and chemical properties. Therefore, organic fertilizers play a key role in maintaining high and stable yields while activating and improving the soil. In production, apply 2,500–3,000 kg of well‑decomposed farmyard manure per mu, or 120–400 kg of commercial organic fertilizer per mu. 2. Apply chemical fertilizers judiciously. Cucumber root systems are shallow and relatively delicate; overly concentrated applications can cause root burn. When using chemical fertilizers, adopt a strategy of frequent, small‑dose applications. For base dressing, apply 50–100 kg of a balanced, active humic‑acid compound fertilizer per mu. Throughout the growing period, supplemental topdressing should be applied as needed.

1. Increase the application of organic fertilizers.

Organic fertilizers not only supply cucumbers with a full range of nutrients essential for growth and development, but also reduce soil bulk density, increase soil porosity, and improve the soil’s physical and chemical properties. Consequently, organic fertilizers play a crucial role in sustaining high yields of cucumbers as well as in activating and amending the soil. In production, apply 2,500–3,000 kg per mu of well‑decomposed farmyard manure or 120–400 kg per mu of commercial organic fertilizer.

2. Apply chemical fertilizers appropriately

Cucumber roots are shallow and relatively fragile; applying fertilizer at too high a concentration can cause root burn. When using chemical fertilizers, apply them in small, frequent doses. For the base application, apply 50–100 kg per mu of a balanced, active humic‑acid compound fertilizer. Throughout the growing period, supplemental fertilization is essential. In the early stages, prioritize growth control; in the later stages, combine fertilization with irrigation and harvesting, applying a nitrogen‑potassium fertilizer every 7–10 days (or use a soluble fertilizer containing equivalent nutrient levels).

3. Foliar application of fertilizer

Foliar fertilization is typically applied during the peak fruit‑setting stage. In the early growth phase, nutrient supplies are relatively ample; however, after fruit set, reproductive growth intensifies and nutrient demand increases significantly. Moreover, at this stage, lower temperatures reduce root activity and diminish the plant’s capacity to absorb nutrients. To meet the nutritional requirements for normal fruit development, foliar application of fertilizer can help replenish the nutrients needed by the plants.

When growth-point stagnation occurs in mid-winter, promptly apply a foliar fertilizer such as Huangjinlu to promote normal cucumber growth. If plant vigor declines during the mid-to-late stages of cucumber development, promptly spray Heizefeng to prevent premature senescence.

4. Application of bio-organic fertilizer

Increasing the application of organic fertilizers and bio‑fertilizers while appropriately reducing chemical fertilizers is an essential strategy for producing pollution‑free, green food. Applying bio‑organic fertilizers can promote robust cucumber growth, enhance fruit set, produce longer fruits, and extend the harvest period.
