Shandong Province has achieved groundbreaking progress in the field of green and efficient peanut production.

On September 6, the yield‑estimation and demonstration meeting for the Shandong Provincial Key R&D Program “Innovation and Demonstration of Key Technologies for High‑Quality, High‑Yield, Water‑Saving, and Fertilizer‑Reducing Peanut Production,” led by Shandong Nongda Fertilizer Technology Co., Ltd., was successfully held at the demonstration site in Zhaojiatang Village, Gangcheng Town, Ningyang County, Tai’an City. A yield‑assessment expert panel comprising five specialists—Professor Li Xiangdong from Shandong Agricultural University, Senior Agronomist Li Wenjin from the Tai’an Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Senior Agronomist Liu Changqing from the Tai’an Agricultural Technology Extension Center, Senior Agronomist Li Qiuzhi from the Liaocheng Academy of Agricultural Sciences, and Researcher Qi Wei from the Ningyang County Agricultural Development Service Center—conducted an authoritative evaluation of the project’s implementation results.
As a key peanut-producing region in Shandong Province’s Yellow River Basin, peanut cultivation has long been constrained by challenges such as drought‑prone, infertile soils with poor water‑ and nutrient‑retention capacity. The conventional, resource‑intensive practices of flood irrigation and indiscriminate fertilization urgently require technological innovation. This project addresses these industry‑specific bottlenecks by integrating core technologies—including the breeding of drought‑tolerant, high‑quality peanut varieties, precision management through integrated water–fertilizer systems, and the development of humic‑acid‑based controlled‑release blended fertilizers—thereby establishing a quantified performance framework that achieves over 15% water savings, more than 20% fertilizer reduction, and at least 10% yield increase.
The yield‑estimation procedure was conducted in strict accordance with the “Shandong Province Standards for Crop Yield Estimation and Acceptance,” with double‑blind yield assessments carried out simultaneously in both the demonstration and control plots. Following the presentation of the operating protocol by Professor Li Xiangdong, head of the yield‑estimation team, the expert panel randomly selected three sampling points in each plot, with each point covering an actual harvested area of 6.67 square meters. After standardizing the process—fruit picking, sieving, impurity removal, and weighing—the final results showed a fresh‑fruit yield of 1,281.35 kg per mu in the demonstration plot and 1,077.31 kg per mu in the control plot. Adjusted to a 55% dry‑matter conversion factor, the pod yield reached 704.74 kg per mu in the demonstration plot, representing an 18.94% increase over the control plot’s 592.52 kg per mu, thereby exceeding the project’s performance targets.
The implementation of this project marks a transformative shift in our province’s peanut production, moving it from labor‑intensive to technology‑intensive and from resource‑wasteful to resource‑efficient. By establishing a green production model characterized by “high yield and high efficiency—cost reduction and resource conservation—ecological harmony,” the project comprehensively lowers production costs and significantly enhances the efficiency of water and fertilizer use, thereby playing a pivotal demonstration and leadership role in boosting farmers’ incomes, improving agricultural productivity, and advancing the rural revitalization strategy.
This yield‑assessment and field‑observation event substantiated the tangible benefits of technological innovation with robust data, offering replicable and scalable agri‑technological solutions for ecological protection and high‑quality development in the Yellow River Basin, thereby highlighting the strategic role of scientific and technological advancement in rural revitalization.
The successful conclusion of this yield‑estimation and acceptance meeting not only marks a breakthrough in Shandong Province’s efforts to promote green, high‑efficiency peanut production, but also sets a “Shandong model” for the transformation and upgrading of peanut‑producing regions across China that face arid and infertile soils. This achievement holds far‑reaching significance for safeguarding national oilseed security and advancing the green development of agriculture.
